I'd like to point out that the minimum last season we played with the team that was mostly AHL players.
Let's also not forget the inexperienced coach. Because I think Lars problems were in his inexperience.
Oh, and I think Elvis is an overrated goalie. Korpi has shown that his poor play the two seasons before last was really due to injury.

If it was just the player without the off-ice garbage, I would be thrilled. I legitimately believe he's going to make this team better on the ice.

It's the rest I don't care for. Particularly coming so quickly after the question marks with Babcock. It could work out exceptionally for us and I hope it does, but that's two dubious calls back to back and so I'm concerned.
Probably won't make you feel any better that Babcock tried to get Provorov while he was coaching Tronta.. Can't help but think Babcock had an influence in this move. As you noted already.. excited for the player. He needs to get a good PR firm though to help him change that public image.

I just don't think Provorov is worth a first and a second.

Now if the Flyers connection is real and Hayes is next ..........

Not sure if you've looked at our RD but we don't have a reassuring presence to help Provorov. The scary thing is we're asking him to help some very inexperienced RD.

I don't read this is as loading up for a cup run, Jarmo ain't that dumb. I read it as going for competitiveness so our future cup run core (the kids) can learn in the right environment. And win games along the way.

A rebuild that is purely driven by the draft picks would take a terribly long time (5 years? 10 years?), and be largely self- defeating.
So you think the addition of a potential locker room problem is helping establish a right environemnt for the kids to learn in? Along with a potentially problem coach. I'm not sure, It is a parlay that better work.

I think the idea that this trade is shortsighted is incredibly misplaced.

I also think that Provorov is exactly the kind of D we need on the 2nd pair.

There are several potential outcomes from this trade.

Provorov plays pretty well and signs a reasonable 8 year contract extension and stays with the Jackets until he is 37 and decides to leave Columbus in 2034 as a still serviceable defenseman who want to chase his 5th Cup as Columbus starts to rebuild as their great dynasty comes to an end. This is obviously the best case scenario, especially when people point to this trade as a great catalyst to Columbus’ several Stanley Cups. It would be awesome. I find it highly unlikely.

A much more likely scenario is he plays ok, the team is about the 12th best team in the East next year, and he is traded at the deadline in 2025 when Columbus is 10th in the East and he hasn’t signed an extension.

Maybe he is fantastic and rediscovers what once made people excited about Philadelphia’s future, but even in that scenario he might want to test free agency, which again makes this a short term move.

Or the trade could be a total disaster, Provorov and Babcock butt heads almost immediately, Provorov goes back to Russia next summer, and he tells the NHL to go screw itself. Then we basically gave up good draft capital for a disaster.

I just don’t see much likelihood in a scenario where he becomes a solid and reasonably priced piece of the Jackets for the next 5-7 seasons and is never a liability. I think he is most likely here for 2 years. Maybe he signs the extension and is here for 10 years, but he would likely be overpayed and declining in the second half of his next contract.

Im hoping this exact thing becomes a tool to help grow the young man. "Listen, you're an experienced vet now Ivan. We need you to help teach and nurture this d corps."

I had a guy work for me that absolutely nobody wanted. When I approached him in that manner I could get him to go through walls for me.

I did say, "I'm hoping"...
This kind of reminds me of that scene in Moneyball.

As I said in another comment, Sandin was available at deadline for a late 1st. That was the good trade to make. Cheaper, better, younger and team-controlled.
i mean, this is a message board so #FactsDontMatter but

rasmus sandin was traded on february 28th.

vladislav gavrikov was moved on march 1st.

unless you're saying the jackets should've moved their own first rounder there's no legitimate complaint here.

You left out the part where the Jackets scratched Gavrikov for weeks and had a deal fall through - to be fair.

Sandin sucks though

I think this is an excellent trade for you guys. Probably aren’t going to get someone who can contribute in the immediate future with the picks, and Provorov is good and should fit like a glove on the roster. You guys also don’t need another prospect. Needed a LD far more imo.

I view it as “would the CBJ be happy if they got a top 2/4 LD with that pick” and my answer is a resounding yes. But they got a proven NHL player instead of one who might be that in three years.

Hopefully so, but at that point you have accompliced nothing with this trade.

Instead by doing nothing you would have Sale, But or Musty on ELC. Or by better asset management you would have Sandin as a trade piece or in the roster.

Im tired of Jarmo is tunnelvisioning on making the playoffs asap when he the goal should be lifting a trophy.
Serious question... How did this sacrifice going for the cup? I know you know the odds of just making the NHL as a contributor as a late first, let alone a 2nd round pick. The odds of being an impact player go even lower.

If you've seen me post, you know I'm a build guy and love the prospects and young players but at some point you simply have to add talent that can improve the team ability overall. I don't know if Provo does that but this risk seems really pretty low in my opinion. Most of the angst seems to be around his off ice perception/reality rather than his game. He's 26, a former 7OA pick, plays a solid 200ft game, iron man and plays 2nd pair LHD at the NHL level. I mean... that's what we were looking for. Hell, I was with the in crowd on Hanifin. He had one year left and would likely have cost more with no guarantee of extending. However, I believe most of us saw that as a key piece of building.

One thing I truly believe is that building doesn't mean every piece you add is a 10 year piece. Maybe the price isn't ideal but reality is it was more the cost of Gavi and Korpi with 30% retention. we lost a 2nd round pick in 2024 or 2025 between those moves. Any player at 22 is 3 years from contributing and likely not an impact player. What if they re-sign Provo for another 3 years because Mateychuck doesn't develop. Svozil doesn't develop... This is a known commodity that actually could be a long term piece but many on here are acting like he's already on the way out, the team will continue to suck and any change is bad because they aren't 18 years old.

Again, I ask... How does this move sacrifice going for the cup?

Don't misread this as I'm a Provo lover and kill puppies. I'm going to see what he's like when he's here under this regime and group before condemning him. Same with Babcock. On the surface I have the same concerns as many of you but let's see where this goes before throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Oh no not the charts.

I’ll sit through the social issue invading sports debates. But I can’t do the analytics charts for defensemen boys. im out
So you’d rather talk about his impact off the ice, which won’t help us win any games, rather than his impact on the ice, which would or wouldn’t?

I'm not a fan of this trade. It sounds like provorov has "potential" on offense and good size for defense but statistically he's is underwhelming at both.

I'll combine this with the fact that the Cincinnati Bengals turned around their franchise by acquiring a coach and players who buy into the team system, changed the culture positively, and want to be there. Babcock and Provorov don't give me that same warm and fuzzy feeling. I know they are different sports but team culture is important no matter what sport you play.
