Hockey is for everyone isn't just about the people that play the game. It also includes the people that work for the team also.

During the Monsters Pride Night they showed interviews of people throughout the organiztion who celebrated Pride. Just because you don't play the game doesn't mean you're not part of it. I am sure there are people all through the Columbus organization that appreciate Pride Night.

It's for fans too.

Naturally and inevitably this thread has gone off the rails.

Let’s put this, as much as possible, to how Provorov can or won’t help us on the ice. The off ice stuff has been spoken for on all sides. It just turns political, which this is not the forum for.

So! To get things back to hockey. I'm guessing Provy's role is expected to be the Shutdown Guy. Here's hoping he doesn't take issue with that. He sounds like he'd be very physically capable; he just needs to get his head in the game.

Babcock definitely has ALL the experience he needs to handle that but apparently only about 90% of the panache. Hoping he's able to keep that 10% under control...

This is the provorov we need. We need Provorov from his second year in the league. 150 hits, 20 goals 20 assists.

Provorov plays a lot of games and eats a lot of minutes. He is not a big offensive threat, and his defensive ability seems to depend on his partners, how good his team is, etc. Even though he had a much, much higher draft position, he sounds essentially like a Savard or a Gavrikov. Because of retention he is now paid more in the range that he deserves -- $4.7 million for the next two years. If we retain on him in 2025, he will likely bring a return like Savard and Gavrikov.

So it could be the case that we get two seasons to let the left D develop and then flip him for something similar to what we paid for him. If he isn’t a distraction, and continues to be a Savard/Gavi type, I guess I can accept this.

My question is then what. I still see this as a stop gap move. If we are a borderline playoff team in 2025, I don’t think you can risk letting him walk for nothing. So does it look like we are giving up on the playoffs if we move him for a first? What does that do to the team? I don’t think you give him a long extension in the dollar range he will be seeking which I assume is higher than the $8.6 million he will be earning in 2024-25. So what happens?

fans are already kinda casting him as 'the shutdown guy' but imo there's realistically a lot more nuance to it. yeah, he skates well and hits like a freight train, but he's also a pretty good puck mover and has a ton of skill.

the jackets love modern defensemen who activate a ton. he can play that game, too – it's just not as much a part of his game as it is with some others (i.e. werenski). how much of that he'll be asked to do probably depends on his partner.

if he's with boqvist, he's probably more of the 'steady partner' type guy. if it's jiricek, he's probably going to activate a bit more until jiricek gets more comfortable jumping into the rush.

the good news is that he's talented enough to both. the ideal partner for a puck-mover who jumps in the rush isn't a big, lumbering 'shutdown' guy – it's a fleet footed guy who is sturdy but also brings skill, which is what he is.

he'll get big minutes, but likely easier matchups and a more talented partenr than what he had this season in philly.

personally, i'd make him the first defenseman out there in overtime. not a fan of the way werenski plays 3v3.

I’m expecting another “big” move. Maybe on draft night.
my expectation is:
1. the hayes stuff still happens, but with retention and a minimal return (something like roslovic + bemstrom)
2. one big surprise 'win now' move that people aren't predicting because it doesn't align with the team's perceived immediate needs (i.e. they turn some of their young guys into another impact winger) which is met with confusion and complaints initially that turns to excitement when people see the lines in training camp

Would fans have praised the moves? Hell no. But do you want your GM to make moves to please fans, or to win the cup?

Both of them were stable names at stacked Rangers and Bruins defences. Youre still suggesting theyre under a healthy scratch threat in CBJ defence? Absolutely not.

But that wasn't really my point. I just threw those names out of the hat. There'll be better players available, but I can't predict who they will be. Maybe someone like Demelo is available. He's excellent defensive 2nd pair player who wouldnt cost as much. I'll happily point out all the better moves as the off-season gets going.

No they weren’t.

Forbort was Bostons worst Dman and Mikkola a healthy scratch threat.

This board has been crying 2 years about the defense and calling Jarmo to be fired for not trying to address that.

Provorov isn’t an all in move. It can be a great longterm add or bridge for Mateychuk and Svozil. While they kept all their prospects and the 3rd overall pick.

His contract is far more valuable than any contract you’ll find from the UFA market, it has zero anchor potential.

Well, good thing he's going to a worse team, then. Also, relative to his teammates he was bad.

A 1st and a 2nd for a guy who, at best, is a "well, maybe he just needs a change of scenery" away from possibly being a top 4 guy? Yikes.

For nearly an identical cap hit and 2 more years of term, Ottawa paid a 1st and two 2nds for Chychrun.

Remember what those stats said about Gavrikov?

Absolutely no one thinks Provorov is a 3rd pair Dman

FWIW here are cam charron's thoughts on the provorov trade.

worth sharing because he's like the only analytics writer who actually has analytics experience in an NHL front office.

the whole thing is good and reasonable but here's a specific callout:
If you’re of the opinion that Provorov is a complete dud because his on-ice results from playing big minutes on a bad team are pretty miserable, then you might think the Flyers made out like bandits to get anything for him. But Provorov is a still a solid, puck-moving defenceman with a very heavy workload who kind of fits the style of play that the Blue Jackets have, which is a very heavy focus on puck-moving defencemen.

Defencemen are tough to judge with on-ice data since there are so many factors that go into a player’s on-ice results that aren’t necessarily due to any one thing the player is doing good or poorly.

Looks like I missed a lot of fun. When it comes to Provorov, we don't know what will happen, the change of scenery may be good for him, he may mesh well with Babcock, the less responsibility playing behind Z may result in better play. None of that may happen and he could be crap. The only thing I can say for sure is that he is better than most of the guys who played on D toward the end of the season.

If it's true Provorov can carry the puck, seems like a great move considering Werenski's been a bit prone to injury, and Boqvist looked a bit young at times when he got stuck in that role 2 years ago. Now you have 3-4 guys who can fill that role - very nice

These are the Flyers defensemen since Provorov got into their lineup, has he ever had an actual solid partner ?
