On ice I’m actually fairly high on Provorov’s upside. I’m not going to make any player comparisons, but I think he will be a treat to have anchoring the 2nd pair (all signs point to Z anchoring the left side of the 1st pair for the foreseeable future). I think the change in his deployment in combination with the change in scenery will be a boon for his metrics. I think my biggest concern regarding Provorov isn’t even about Provorov himself, it’s about who his partner is going to be. Because I haven’t got a damn clue, really. Gudbranson? Please no. Boqvist? That’s interesting. Jiricek? Seems premature to assume he’ll make it out of camp. Peeke seems less than ideal as a partner. Blankenburg could be a nice fit but I’m not sure he needs to be above the 3rd pair right now.

No they weren’t.

Forbort was Bostons worst Dman and Mikkola a healthy scratch threat.

This board has been crying 2 years about the defense and calling Jarmo to be fired for not trying to address that.

Provorov isn’t an all in move. It can be a great longterm add or bridge for Mateychuk and Svozil. While they kept all their prospects and the 3rd overall pick.

His contract is far more valuable than any contract you’ll find from the UFA market, it has zero anchor potential.
I read the opposite about Forbort during the season. Dont recall who was the writer.

Mikkola I was just impressed with as I watched rangers games. Maybe I missed the bad ones but from what I saw he'd be a good upgrade on cbj defense.

In the 15 draft, I was hoping Jarmo would find a way to trade up to get Noah Hanifin and if he couldn't I was hoping he would be able to draft Provorov with the 8th pick. Werenski was my third choice.

Unfortunately, I'm married to a devout Flyers' fan so I watched almost every Flyers game up until 2020. Oft times, we would have one TV on the Flyers game and I'd have a device on the Jackets game, seeing both teams many nights. From the day Provorov made the Flyers team in '16, he seemed very noticeable on the ice in a good way.

I didn't notice Provorov much on the defensive side (positive) and he seemed to play a decent puck moving game while staying responsible in the offensive zone regularly covering for an extremely aggressive partner, often Ghost. His skill was obvious, at least to me. I think he has the tools to be a big addition to the Blue Jackets' blue line.

As far as value goes, I'm not all that good at assessing the value of draft picks, but it seems to me that the 22nd overall pick at BEST is likely to be able to make an NHL roster ~ 3 years after his draft, and it is extremely unlikely he would be a top 6 forward or a top 4 defenseman maybe ever. Yes there are always a few late 1st outliers like Claude Giroux and David Pastrnak, but they are more likely to be a Marko Dano, German Rubtsov, or Gabriel Carlsson. Just look at almost any team's draft history, including our own. Whatever he turns out to be in Columbus, I'm reasonably sure he'll be more productive and valuable than Dano, Rubtsov or Carlsson.

Florida abused Forbort.

It would be a total sieve if they had Gubranson 2.0 on the 2nd pair for the entire season and next to a young player like Jiricek

Provorov is on the same career trajectory as Phaneuf or Ristolainen. I just don't think the he has any offensive upside. If things go great he's going to pot 30 points. The defense was atrocious last season, so something had to be done, but I'm not sure this is the answer. I don't think the cost was excessive.

I'm worried that taking part of his salary can mean for we'll be take Hayes.
I was more worried about that when this trade was breaking.

I don’t think it’s impossible we get hayes but I doubt it now (thankfully)

IP and ZW eating minutes we just got significantly better from a talent & skill perspective (we played last year with nobody this good on D). Does he play with Bo or with Jiricek? Do they encourage him to step in offensively? Gudy and NB/Peeke or Bean.. make these guys earn their minutes. Last year was so sloppy it is tough to tell if any of them will be any good. In time I think we will hear that Jarmo was the driver, the hammer put together a 3 way hockey trade that benefits everyone. Not saying we stole IP, but with the negativity in play we may have gotten exactly what Mgmt targeted. Now lets convince him of the opportunity.

Can Provorov (or Werenski) play the right side??

We need somebody to play top pairing minutes with Werenski. Provorov is pretty much the only guy we have to play with him.

Peeke/Boqvist ain’t it, for different reasons. Forget what hand some of these guys shoot with.

I remember Provorov was once on WC in a pair with Gavrikov and it seems to me that he played on RS (it was a long time ago so I am not quite sure). The other thing is if the coaches would do it, since the stronger side of both is left.

The Flyers were a total mess last few years, so I would not confidently say he truly regressed as a player - likely lost motivation and confidence playing for a losing team with some potential off ice issues too.

I am pretty sure if we take Werenski metrics, they also went down last couple of seasons, do you think he also regressed ?

Russian defenders usually can play both sides simply because there’s very few right handed players in Russia

Werenski- New Dman
Provorov- Jiricek

Would be my guess for top4

As I said yesterday these people are so lost.

Why on earth do everyone elsewhere act like this can be only seen as a win now move and thus makes no sense for Columbus?

Getting really tired of this variety of "analysis". It really is as though people have completely forgotten about what we've been doing in the draft the last two years.
Well, that, and.... was the "surprise competitiveness" of two years ago a true fluke or was last year derailed by poor coaching and injuries.

I'm in agreement with many that there are a lot of ifs associated with this team and the goaltending is a real problem, but I still wonder how disjointed this team must have been for the defense to be that bad - even when they were healthy. It's not just the defense that was the problem. It was the forwards defending and the abysmal goaltending.

To me, the next big step is getting assistants in place that are cohesive and work with whatever Babcock is looking to run. A unit of 5 with expectations to defend is better than a unit of two trying to cover. Maybe we don't have the rainbows I think we do but I think we'll know pretty quickly (About 20 games into the season) how this team will look/perform under new coaching/systems.

I remain an optimist with this group but also a realist that it's still very young and without corrections to center ice and goaltending improvements in a big way, it's likely to be more of the same. So here's hping no off ice distractions from the new crew and commitment to a system that brings out the talent but gets everything they can out of all 6 on the ice.

This could be said for our entire roster. Who is going to be the magical attitude that turns it all around. Even the Reds are having fun and actually winning some games. The Bengals have done it for 2 years. Who will be the one to lead the CBJ out of the sucking?

Provorov might be an ok piece for the team but he won’t be a momentum shifter.

Carlsson in 24-25

If you can run that year with

Johnson 1C
Carlsson 2C

Werenski 1D- Jiricek 2D

You are looking at a big change

I think they also forget how injured the team was last season. If the team was anywhere close to healthy, I think they would have finished about where they finished last year, maybe a few spots lower. I look at it as they team adding to that team, not the team on the ice that finished the season. If they can stay anywhere close to healthy and they adopt to Babcocks system, I can see them hanging around the wind card hunt at the deadline, but ultimately falling off because I don't see the team buying at the deadline unless they are firmly in the hunt, not just hanging around it
