Mo Rielly - "Our Norris Trophy Candidate"

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Morgan is our 4th best D in his own zone (maybe 5th but Dermott plays butter soft minutes so we can't be certain).

I still love him though. I feel like he's cut down on his mistakes and brain farts and plays the game according to what the situation demands.

The last 3 minutes of the Montreal Toronto game tonight is a good distillation of the kind of flaws we're looking at with Rielly that go beyond point pace, and why Rielly should not ever be compared to guys like Hedman and Pietrangelo if we're talking about Norris quality defense.

To recap, Rielly battled hard but didn't box out Corey Perry on Montreals 6 on 5 goal to make it 3-2. Campbell had already made a pad save and attempted to cover up the rebound but Rielly got there about a half steam boat too late to either check Perry or get to the loose puck. But for the final 2 minutes, the Leafs trusted Muzzin and Holl out there to really shut it down. And shut it down they did.

I'm not going to crucify Rielly. He got beat on a hockey play. But the kind of responsibilities the Leafs trust to Holl and Muzzin are the responsibilities you feel confidence in giving to horses like Hedman and Pietrangelo every time. I can't say that's always true of Morgan.
Watch again he originally has position on Perry then Perry muscles him out of way and Rielly goes for a skate up to top of circle for some unknown reason (why? why? why?) ... I know why as a former player but can't repeat what was likely said ... then when puck goes into crease Rielly comes flying back late to pick up his man but instead of cross checking him and ending da chance he tries to approach from side to avoid contact which never works ... people can say well he had a brain fart, well he got pushed up that far, blah blah blah ,,, fact is he made a decision to not entertain a battle with Perry pure and simple ... and it is why he can't be trusted on ice late in games that matter ... and why he can never ever win a Norris ... well unless he scores 100+points which happens in a bad year where Karlseen wins

only leafs fans can see their team dominate like this and scream that they need to dump their #1 dman.
Keep repeating same dumb narrative ... when your #1 guy gets scared and pushed around by Perry you gotta a huge problem ... what you should say is he is our #1 soft offensive threat dman then it would be accurate ... you completely disrespect all D men who played game

I don't think Corey Perry banging in a puck in the crease with a man advantage is indicative of any problem tbh.

Watch replay ... it is blatantly obvious ... Perry did not bang in a puck either he had way too much time to make a skilled play ... he and Rielly were together in front of net ... then Rielly goes for a skate up ice to top of circle why? why? why? ... and completely leaves him man to take our net over ... you are making excuses from him .. shame on you

Rielly is a very good d-man but is on the absolute borderline of what I'd consider to be a true #1 defenceman and he should be paid accordingly when the time comes.

People often confuse players' defacto roles they are forced to play versus where they should be playing in a perfect world.

For Rielly that's top pairing ES minutes with 2nd pairing special teams duties.

the habs had extended zone time 6-on-5 on us and ultimately a legendary crease goalscorer banged in a rebound in the crease. it happens.

It’s a hockey play and of course this happens to everybody. But I happens a lot to Morgan Rielly which is why we shouldn’t talk about point pace and Norris Trophy quality.

Rielly decided to clear Anderson and chased him out into the high slot area and Brodie obviously lost Perry on the rotation. But Perry got two whacks at it and Rielly’s instinct was to try and poke the puck from behind Perry when the instinct should have probably been to have just bulldozed Perry out of position as soon as he realized.

These plays happen a lot but it also shows some systematic issues like over committing on lower percentage players, certain inability to read the threat like the guy in the crease area (who is an all time great like you say) and then to underplay the body in an absolute red alert moment.

Reminds me a lot of Franson and Gardiner looking running around cluelessly in Game 7 vs Boston in OT, and then whacking away with the stick when body positioning and defending with physicality would have been more impactful.

Rielly’s a good player but it’s these details where I’m never signing off on him being a Norris caliber player. At the end of the day, one is free to pump anyone’s tires however you want but it’s not an accident that Muzzin and Holl are the ones getting the tap when they really need the lockdown defense.

Talking about point pace is OK, as long as we understand that it's only one part of the big picture.

Rielly had just that one year where he was in the Norris conversation, it's not really a topic of conversation any more. He's not our best defensive Dman but he is probably our best overall Dman. He's also has great character, is a fantastic teammate and IMHO, he's the kind of player you win with. He makes mistakes sometimes, so does every player on every team but overall, yeah he's pretty great and I'm confident we'll find the cap space to sign him when the time comes.

If you beat up your teammates then no offence but you know dick about what it takes to be a winning team.
No one likes a guy who is afraid to do what it takes to win ... sometimes these types are casualties of da game ... but we don't play by same rules as we used to play game so it is a mute point nowadays ... today we blame da coach for putting that type on da ice when it matters ... coach is not doing what is in best interests of da team ... and Keefer is as tough as nails so you likely won't see Rielly out there and he knows it too ... he has to sleep at night knowing he shat his pants when it counted ... he should thank his lucky stars there were no fans in stands ... Toronto hockey people who buy tickets mostly played and are older folks like me and da booooing would start

Ok..if you're a former player...answer me this: Does the coaching staff not talk to him about this type of stuff? Do they just pull a Babcock and let him figure it out for himself?

The worrying part for me is if they ARE talking to him about his D play and he just has no IQ to learn. Babs tried to reign him in for a couple of seasons and he still barely improved over his pre-Babcock days. I for one thing would prefer a guy who is jumping up in the play a bit less but can actually prevent goals...that to me is someone like Muzzin...

While we're at it, doesn't seem like you know dick about Rielly. And this post of yours is one of the most pathetic posts I've ever read here.

Sorry, I'll phrase that in a way you're more likely to understand - this post of yours is one of da most pathetic posts I've ever read here.

You should see the Norris trophy winners that our leafs have banged in goals against with the goalie pulled.

I have no idea anymore how things are working on team as my kid no longer with Leafs org and not going to Hot Stove on Saturday nights for pints with da boys due to COVID ... but i know how Keefer was trained and very similar coaching/training to me which was very very old school ... so I am guessing he just replaced him on ice and then waited til end of game to give him a piece of his mind ... but bottom line is Keefer should blame only himself ... maybe he was giving Rielly a chance to learn and to see how he would play defense with a 2 goal lead ... well that will be Rielly's last chance ... i think dermy will get next shot if Muzzy is tired ... bottom line you can't put out a lightweight to do job of a heavyweight ... as they say is cards don't send a boy to do a mans job

Jesus H Christmas, these last two pages of...pick your poison, I'll apparently disagree with half of you. Mo isn't perfect but we score a lot more goals when he's on the ice vs when he's off the ice. That works for me, I"m going to win more games. Cheers.

You must be a millennial ...
Da truth hurts ...
Rielly is a skater and a team leader but he is not a good defender and never will be a lockdown type player due to his physical weaknesses ...
He can add some value to team on a limited offense basis but a shooter on da PP he will never be again due to physical weakness ..

To me I would try to move him for a solid defender asset and a prospect as his type of play will never be successful in da playoffs ... when your mommy has to come to town to slap u in da face to summon courage it says a lot

He is very fast and he is very athletic no doubt but he just does not have that god given innate man strength and it shows up in front of net, on walls and in his shot
