Mo Rielly - "Our Norris Trophy Candidate"

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Reilly will never win a Norris.

Reilly is the 4th most important Dman on this team. If u love Reilly, focus on him in the playoffs if u wanna break free from that inaccurate perception.

How do you break that down and come to that opinion?

im guessing you have Muz/Holl as the #1 pair?

On any given night Rielly can make a play that drives me up the wall. That same player on any given night can make a play that pulls me out of my seat screaming, yaaaaaa! How do you evaluate that type of player? You evaluate him on his weaknesses and strengths not on any given night, but on his cumulative effects over a sustained period of time. Morgan Rielly is not a perfect defenseman, but the Maple Leafs benefit from having him on the team as his ability to drive play exceeds his occasional brain farts. Simply put, we score more goals with him on the ice than we have scored against us when he is on the ice. You win games with those types of players, ya can look it up.

Another aspect to consider are his contributions to the team as person and leader within the locker room. I've never heard or read a word said against the kid, from any player, past or present. What I have heard and read are countless compliments directed towards a person who is respected and appreciated. Players like playing with guys who they respect and appreciate, ya can look it up.

There is a certain segment in the fanbase of the Leafs that have a need to belittle and criticize because they focus on the imperfections of a player and not the overall picture, ya can look it up.

It's a flat cap world, make Morgan your top paid D at 6M/ for 5 years, a 1M/yr raise, front load it to keep the real dollar value low so that if there is a need in the future to move on, it's an easier deal to construct.

They are the pairing that takes the tough assignments and the majority of the defensive zone starts.

TJ Brodie also takes on the stay at home role to allow Rielly to play his game. Not saying Rielly is the 4th most valuable D on the team, but a lot of defensemen would love to be in his position.

not an easy discussion ...

Rielly plays a high risk type of game, his focus is on playing on the offence and being that 4 th forward ... TJ, Muz and Holl dont have Rielly skill set and they play a less complicated game

Finally, for the first time in his career, Rielly has that position - the same position that guys like Hedman josi Carlson pietrangelo etc have been in for years.

Finally.

Hedman and pietrangelo are level above Rielly, its not debatable, just saying

The last 3 minutes of the Montreal Toronto game tonight is a good distillation of the kind of flaws we're looking at with Rielly that go beyond point pace, and why Rielly should not ever be compared to guys like Hedman and Pietrangelo if we're talking about Norris quality defense.

To recap, Rielly battled hard but didn't box out Corey Perry on Montreals 6 on 5 goal to make it 3-2. Campbell had already made a pad save and attempted to cover up the rebound but Rielly got there about a half steam boat too late to either check Perry or get to the loose puck. But for the final 2 minutes, the Leafs trusted Muzzin and Holl out there to really shut it down. And shut it down they did.

I'm not going to crucify Rielly. He got beat on a hockey play. But the kind of responsibilities the Leafs trust to Holl and Muzzin are the responsibilities you feel confidence in giving to horses like Hedman and Pietrangelo every time. I can't say that's always true of Morgan.

I honestly just don't understand how a guy who has been playing in the league for so long can still make rookie type mistakes. He takes bad angles all the time, not to mention his ill timed pinches like the other day when he was half heartedly attempting to pinch and got caught out of position. I do see the value in his offense...although I do think he IQ is pretty all over the place when it comes to shooting or passing at crucial moments...but he does things nobody else can do from the back end...for that I think he deserves another contract...but $6M is tops...that's it..not a dollar more. He is basically a knock-off Tory Krug and deserves much less than Tory got from the Blues.

Hes flawed but also irreplaceable for us. Short and sweet summary.

He can't be on pp1 if we are to beat bolts canes panthers caps etc.

Indeed. Most teams need at least 1 offensive dmen, and Rielly is very, very good offensively. Many offensive dmen are soft and liabilities defensively (Barrie, Quinn Hughes, Karlsson, Chabot, Klingberg, Schultz, etc.), but Rielly is actually very strong, decently physical, and about average defensively.

Certainly if you compare him to Brodie or Muzzin, he’s not as good defensively, but he’s decent in his own end, and so good offensively. He’s not a dominant 2-way stud like prime Weber/Doughty, but he’s a solid 1D, who brings top notch offence, with better D than most offensive dmen.

Leafs need a good pp quarterback for deep playoff run. Rielly ain't that. End of story.

I feel like those numbers are misleading. Byproduct of playing on a top PP. He doesn’t add much and his lack of shooting threat up top allows teams to just cover the other 4 guys. What’s his job? Skate to C and drop it back and hold the line essentially. And pass it around up top while we kill 2 minutes of momentum

Yes he's the only one of those guys that plays on a good PP.

The other guys are threats. They all have bombs from the point and ability to make seam passes. What does Rielly really add to our PP that’s exceptional? He holds the line and immediately defers to Marner or Matthews. Pretty much all he adds

How does this help us today though? riellys PP / 60 isnt going to get the PP working. The PP is dead this very moment and Reilly is a significant reason.

Rielly rode Marner when the league had no answer for marners tricks. Teams had no answer for that slap pass down low with JVR and Kadri waiting to clean up. When JVR left , Marners PP tricks worked for a little while longer until they have come to a halt today and in need of a change .

Now that Marner has been figured out, Rielly has been exposed as having no major PP skill. His PP points depend on Marner . A player like Carlson would have our PP at no.1 in the league .

Rielly retires a Leaf if it's up to me but in terms of the PP this little back and forth between him and marner is killing us now especially because neither are threats from their position on the ice and Rielly has come up with 0 other tricks otherwise.

You put me on that pp and I gonna get some points, passing left and right.

He can't even get the puck to the crease. Forget about scoring.

And teams know he is weak. They start pressuring him the moment he gets the puck. And he makes stupid decisions after that. Not a playoff material.

How many playoff pp points did he get in comparison with Krug or Carlson?

25 playoff games and one goal. ONE.

Based on what I've seen, Rielly's role on the PP leads to a lot of cheap points.

He's expected to do the drop pass and set up on the blueline as a middleman for Matthews/Marner when they can't shoot or make a cross-seam pass.

On the other hand, Carlson, Krug, and Burns are legitimate PP threats.

Carlson and Burns have great shots while Krug is a solid playmaker off the rush with the man advantage.

I disagree. The PP will sort itself out. There's too much talent for it not to. What we need from Rielly is for him to step up his game come playoff time and dominate. He has the ability, but way too often he looks dumb as a rock defensively.
