I absolutely DESPISE the “Yankees buy championships” statements.

I mean cmon...

Yeah, I figured that my post would get reactions similar to yours'. You have the right to despise my comment, as I have that right to say it. We can still be friends and agree to disagree. Yes, you know......we Mets fans are envious. But somehow we got Stroman and a staff the Yankees wish they had. But, you have 1st place, another PO appearance and 27 (or is it 28?) championships. So, I just put myself in my place before you do. Lol.

Yeah man, I am not dissing on Diaz as much as I am Cano. Diaz will eventually figure it out. If the Mets are going to continue this run of success, they need Diaz and even Familia to get back to where they once was. Familia is but a bunch of ????. Wtf?
Yeah IDK about Fam. He had, what, two dominant years? And outside of that, he always reminded me of Armando Benitez, where he was always on the precipice of disaster. I know he's had health issues this year, but still, he has been horrible.

I had just attributed Familia's issues this year to being mentally checked out in the 8th inning slot. We see that over and over with former closers.

Diaz, I have no idea what his issue has been. Maybe there's a Chipper Jones jersey buried under Citi.

Diaz has been dominant when he is on and has self destructed when he is off. Nothing in the middle really. He's going to need to be lock down again really soon. The Nationals and Braves series are big. If they are winning, he has to lock those down. Cannot have a bullpen meltdown at this juncture of the season.

If he can't find it, need to go to Lugo as the closer or in games that Lugo is on, he needs to go multiple innings and finish the game.

I think Diaz is being hit with the perfect storm for such a cataclysmic season.

He's legitimately struggling in his own right but I think he's also the subject of some natural regression from his super season last year AND extremely bad hitter's luck AND the worst defense in baseball. All of this of course exasperates his season and makes it look like a porta potty being tossed into a running magma flow.

Its why I'm glad we didn't trade him. Aside from the fact that selling him this low after buying him that high would be unforgivably dumb, I think he can bounce back.

We've discussed Diaz a couple Diaz. He has a few issues this year, and two are probably luck-related.

1. His BABIP against has been hovering around .400, which is crazy for anyone but of course someone with such good stuff. This is at least partly influenced by bad luck.

2. The percentage of pitches opponents make contact on that he throws out of the zone is 15%-20% higher than normal. So he's trying to get guys to chase, and for whatever reason they're making contact (which combined with the high BABIP is giving him fits).

3. He's throwing the slider in the zone more, and it's being hit more, despite having the same velocity and spin rate as usual.

So, it's just a frustrating season for him. He throws good pitches on the zone, guys hit it. He throws good pitches out of the zone, guys hit it. And when guys hit it, the ball is finding holes and gaps. I'm glad we kept him; too much here is bad-luck-type stuff and will turn around.

Familia was trending this way for awhile. It’s why i hates the signing. He walks way too many people.

Only a matter of time before it catches up to you. You can’t put guys on every inning and then rely on DP and Ks. Not every time out.

The Mets also haven't learned that they idea that you take a closer and plug him in as a 8th guy isn't an easy fix. How many times have they tried it? Billy Taylor, JJ Putz.....

Excuses for Familia, excuses for Diaz

Ridiculous

the idea that Diaz has been unlucky is laughable the guy has been torched multiple times and is the number one reason for the whole the Mets dug themselves this season

The Mets are one of, maybe the only, team that can reasonably expect a quality start from every guy in the rotation. So when they get on a roll, like they have since the break when they've been like a full half-run better than anyone else, they can really move quickly.

Of course, the hole they dug was deep. If they cool off for two weeks that's probably it for them.

The other thing that's keeping me from getting too excited is that they're on this tear against horrid teams, albeit San Fran was hot at the time. I'm expecting some regression once they face better competition, despite them having the benefit of having a home-heavy schedule for the remainder of the year.

It's also the Mets, so something cataclysmically wrong will happen soon

It's laughable to think that the pitcher with the 6th highest BABIP of the last 10 years (40+ IP, 3679 pither sample) might just be suffering from some misfortune?

When something goes wrong for Matz it tends to corkscrew into chaos

Pretty much. Surprised it took this long, seeing the same team in 6 days will do that to anyone. He torched them last time so I'm sure they had a little something extra coming into tonight.

Sorry guys, this is my bad. I accidentally felt confident that the Mets were going to sail smoothly to eight in a row.
