I heard the Mets asked for Torres and 17 prospects.
I was told that that is the standard asking price for all teams for all trades, so nothing to see here. You negotiate by starting in a different galaxy and then after a few million years traveling at light speed you might be on the same page. GMing 101.

The Yankees and the Mets are not rivals.

Apparently only the Mets think they are.

None of that really matters. Thing is they don't make moves with the Yankees. It's something they don't do. I would be all for Wheeler going to the Yankees and the Mets getting a couple of prospects that we could use for the future or ammo in the offseason. They'll end up sending him to the Rays or the Astros and get a similar deal.

A non-rival team wants four pieces for Ray and sources are still unsure if the Mets would deal with us after they dealt with Philly.

Can we now put to rest the notion that the Yankees tax is made up?
Are you really complaining that the yanks didn't get Vargas??

If the Yankees aren't rivals and they don't make moves with the Yankees, then it's a Yankees tax.

Here's the thing, they aren't asking for MORE from the Yankees, they just don't make deals at all. There is no tax if there is no trade that gets made at any time.

What did the Diamondbacks ask for from other teams for Ray? Did they ask the Yankees for Frazier + 3, then reduce their ask, then still find there was no deal? Did they hold firm? Was the initial ask from other teams something less? None of this is known. This is what I was talking about earlier--you guys see the initial ask from the Yanks, assume only the Yankees were being asked for something crazy, and then when the final deal comes through act slighted.

That says ask, not initial ask. There’s nothing about anything after that. Ask Heyman if you really want to know. Also considering that Nightengale said the talks were dead, I’d have to imagine there wasn’t a reduction or willingness to meet in the middle, because as quickly as the talks were reported, it was reported that they died. But I imagine you’ll spin that someway.

As far as the Mets--they don't do business with division rivals or the Yankees. They just traded a not totally insignificant piece to Philly when they are chasing Philly. Ergo, it's fair to wonder if they will now do business with the Yankees. This isn't a "Yankees tax" issue with the Mets, it's a "The Mets are always afraid of being burned by rivals" issue.

The Yankees aren’t rivals. The only people who believe in that are the Mets and their fans.

Inferiority complex strikes again.

So only the Mets owners think it's a rivalry. Then it's a Yankees tax.
I think Mets fans would be more willing to listen to your argument if you put it as follows: The Mets care a shit ton about PR (go figure) and so they add a tax when trading with all teams they share a city with. The Mets are unique trade partners with the Yankees. Mets have an excuse which I can forgive them for, other teams don't.

So then...it's a Yankees tax?

We've pretty much admitted that it's a thing.
