Have to think it's something to entice him to join after this season. It's a good hire regardless of the connection, but Epstein connection has to be a prelude to having him come in a the President of Baseball Ops and will allow Sandy to exit gracefully over time.

All of this is so strange, the Mets are actually hiring competent people to run the team.

I know it doesn't affect the on-field product but it's really great to see Cohen out there with his wife handing out giveaways to season ticket holders. And interacting with fans on Twitter. I really thought I'd hate the guy because apparently he's always been scum. But from literally the moment he took over, he has been great. It's like he's using this as an opportunity to rehabilitate his image or something. Whatever it is, he's a million times better than either Wilpon, not even considering the money stuff.

I'm a white guy, not sure why my opinion on whether "Indians" is offensive should matter. IMO it's a discussion between the leagues, teams, and affected groups. I don't think I deserve a say in the naming of a baseball team I don't root for or a football team I don't root for.

I'll tell you, living in Washington, there are very few people that actually still care about the name change. There were a good number of people who were of the "I can never root for them again" mindset to start but now that they've won 4 in a row or whatever, everyone is back on the WFT train. People get over it quick and those that don't get over it, IMO, have some issues. There will be guys who still dress themselves up in Chief Wahoo gear and parade around like dumbasses, and they will be weird.

Agreed as will the Washington Redskins for me. Sorry but I don't see what the big deal is about sports team names. Leave it the F alone!
If it's not a big deal, why does it matter if they're changed? Either the name is a big deal or it isn't. You can't claim it's not a big deal but then be upset if a team decides to change it.

If one of my teams changed its name over some BS like this, I’d stop being a fan/supporting them. They are the Washington Redskins. They are the Cleveland Indians. I will continue to refer to them as such. These teams have no spines or respect for the history of these franchises. These teams have been around for a very long time. This isn’t like the Hornets changing to the Pelicans after teams moved from their cities or whatever. The Indians and Redskins have been around for a very long time with rich histories that petty people are shitting all over them. You don’t have to be a fan of the teams to appreciate them. The fact so many fans don’t care just shows how little they respect the franchises they’re supposedly fans of and how weak willed they are.

I don't think people care about the names being potentially offensive. I think they just like to complain. Redskins is a bit different since it's a slur.

Ok man, I'll look for you wearing your Chief Wahoo gear staring down tribal leaders at the next protest. With the real fans.

The Cleveland Spiders existed before the Indians. Why don't you have respect for the Spiders? They were treated terribly. Terrible. Many people are saying no team was treated worse.

I went to a high school that was originally established in 1911. At that time, from their inception, they were the Indians. It was a small rural town (I took a bus to get there, I was in an earth science magnet program) that really embraced high school sports. Very small-town America. It was nice. They had an Native American painted on the water tower, INDIANS in big text underneath.

Eventually my senior year we took a vote to change names. I of course voted to change it. It was like 62-38 to keep it. Eventually the school board came back and said you have to change it anyway. They handled it poorly. The town was outraged.

20 years later and and you'd be hard pressed to find a person there who cares about it. That mascot at the high school was a major part of the town's identity; EVERYONE in town was invested in it when the controversy was going on. But things change and people move on. Now everyone associates with the new name, the school ended up cleaning up selling new merchandise over the next several years, and all is well. It's really not that big of a deal and IMO the few people who are still hung up on the name changing two decades ago are upset not because the school has a new mascot but because of more deeply-seated beliefs that they don't care if "Indians" offends anyone and a general idea that some sort of perverted concept of free speech allows the school to use any type of racist imagery it chooses. Unsurprisingly, the town is 95% white with a large older population.

If they want to make this right, take the proceeds from the new name or mascot over the next year and donate it to the Native American foundations that make a difference.

They’ve been the Cleveland Indians since 1915. That’s as good as an argument as saying we should call the Yankees the Highlanders or god forbid the f***ing Orioles because they had a different name over 100 years ago.
