Imagine being the third most valuable team in the MLB, and dumping your best player because of salary. The Red Sox could 10000% afford Mookie and not have to worry about consequences.

Red Sox are dumb and this was dumb.

That being said...ya just hate to see it.

betts is on another level...but people said the same thing the last time the sox and dodgers delete and the red sox unloaded a trillion $$ in salary between gonzalez, beckett and crawford then a year later boston won the WS

Dang...the Phillies and not us are the 6th choice...really?. Does Fanduel have some inside scoop that the Phillies #3 thru #5 SP's, Eflin, Arrieta and Velasquez are going to morph this year into Bobby Ojeda, Sid Fernandez and Rick Aguillera? lol

Seriously, their pitching still blows chunks even with the addition of Wheeler who I'd love to see how he's going to perform in that bandbox known as Citizens Bank. Me thinks Zack is going to find out pretty quickly how much he misses Citi Field.

I dunno man, I like their lineup but I don't love it. I actually like our lineup better than the Phillies and I certainly like our pitching better.

I dunno man...I think Phils are being very overrated here and Mets and Nats underrated...hmmm

I think ATL wins over 100 games this year and wins the division easily. After that it’s anyone’s guess who is 2nd. I would lean towards the Mets or Nats. The Nats pitchers might have a hangover from the added innings. I could see something like 103-59 for ATL 91-71 for Mets 88-74 Nats and 86-76 Phillies. I think something big has to happen for the Braves this year. If it doesn’t I believe Snitker is probably fired and that roster gets an overhaul

I can go along with those projections of yours tho the Mets winning over 90 games is predicated on the fact that the pen of Betances stays healthy, Diaz and Familia revert to 2018 form and Lugo does what he did last year.

I don't think it's unreasonable to anticipate the pen will be improved however in my mind, we need to also hope Stroman pitches better than he did when he came here and that either Wacha or Porcello becomes an effective bottom of the rotation guy. And oh, it would be also nice if Matz can pitch as well as he did during the 2nd half.

So lot's of "if's" for us but it's the same for everyone else in the division except for the Braves who like you say very likely will win over 100 games as they are loaded.

You have a Vegas book (Circa) ranking the Phillies #1 and Mets/Nats 2/3 in the NL East behind the Braves while a local NJ book (fanduel) ranks the Nats #1 Phils #2 and Mets #3. There have always been large differences in futures odds by sportsbook but now you have different locations and their biases and those differences become much more pronounced. Rhode Island has sports betting and they get almost all pro-boston picks. I can only imagine what futures odds on the pats and red sox will be when sports betting is available in boston. Can you imagine bets on our local teams when the NY sports betting apps are available and Yonkers and Queens racinos get sports betting kiosks?

Regarding Wheeler, I'm sure he's happy pitching wherever he got a nice fat contract. He'll probably appreciate his team being able to hit at home even if he gets hit.

the life of a mets fan...

This is a lot like the life of being a Knicks fan except the tree keeps dying.

I don't particularly care what happens to the Mets, as I am about as casual a baseball fan there is, but if the deal to sell the team to Cohen was rocky before the leaks, I can't imagine it would make things better.

Except maybe this puts enough public pressure and embarrassment on the Wilpons to sell

God i'm so tired of that guy.

He's such a grifting *******.
A couple years ago on my first trip to Vegas, I was walking through the MGM with my buddies and I said "oh my god there's Pete Rose!"

He was sitting at a folding table with a sign for autographs outside some memorabilia place.

And not one person stopped or even acknowledged him.

It was a strange experience at the time for me haha. Kinda felt bad for him tbh

but in this case, he's 100% right.

No he's not. He was a manager betting on his own games.

After his ban he lied about it for 15 years, then wrote a book admitting it. He applied and got rejected. He continued to gamble, illegally, and then announced he was ready when gambling began legal b/c he wasn't violating anything actually.

Pete Rose isn't in the HOF because of Pete Rose. If he was remorseful from day 1, and kept his head down, he would have been in 20 years ago. Great player, total shitbag of a human. I don't feel the slightest bit of sympathy for him.

ha i'm not surprised.

Most of this HOF stuff is about that exactly. The ability to hock HOF Pete Rose! baseballs.

He's a grifter through and through.

I can't believe all it took to get Betts was Brusdar Gratero and Alex Verdugo. It's like the Josh Donaldson trade where you know it's an immediate W for the team acquiring a league MVP

I think Rose is a crappy guy, but I still think he belongs in the HOF.
He's definitely a crappy guy. And if he wasn't banned from baseball, he certainly would be in the Hall.

But pointing to another infraction or illegal to justify your own falls flat to me.

The whole no gambling on baseball seems to be the golden rule.

Rose has relished, celebrated, mocked and tried to monetize his ban. He's tried to throw it back in baseball's face (holding his own autograph signing in Cooperstown on Induction Weekend). He has shown no contrition, really hasn't taken ownership of his misdeeds.

Let him rot.

This is a fair take. And I admit that I don't like him leveraging the sign stealing thing. That's shitty, even for him.

But I still don't care, really. Let him in. As far as I'm concerned, it's based on on-field accomplishments.

My feeling is they should allow him on the ballot. Say, "You will be given a reprieve and have three years of eligibility." Then let the voters decide. I'd wager he doesn't make it. And at that point, he can STFU about it, since he was given a chance and wasn't chosen.

And if he is chosen? Fine. Put him in, and next to the display about his accomplishments you can put up an equal-sized display about him being a liar, a cheat, the consummate bad guy. He'd "get his wish" but look like shit for as long as the HOF is around.

And the saga could be over.
