The bullpen did. The Nats starters consistently go deep into games.

Sherzer only went 5 yesterday

A major strength of the Yankees was their bullpen so I don't see how that's a ding on them. Who cares if it's the starting pitcher or a reliever who gets the out. Their biggest issue by far was completely undisciplined hitting outside of maybe 3 players

The Royals strategy only worked because all of their series were short. Even a great bullpen will be worn down when they have to pitch day after day in a six or seven game series. The opposing hitters will also improve with multiple looks at the same relievers.

Think I'd still take the gamble on Cole. You'd think Cole-Paxton-Tanaka-Severino will at least get them to the WS

Ace's don't always come through either though... just look at Kershaw. Cole and Verlander were both human against the Yankees... they just couldn't capitalize like the Nats did. Cole walked what, like 5 of our batters?

They have to sign Cole if they have any desire to win a title. The team as presently constituted isn't going to get the job done. I would also do anything possible to get rid of Stanton. That contract is horrible now and it will get worse with each passing year. They also need to take a look at the training and conditioning staff. There is no excuse to have that many injuries in a non contact sport like baseball.

If we had traded for Verlander in 2017 instead of Gray, we would have won the title. You can't convince me otherwise.

Him and Sanchez... buy one get one free

I agree, but that was hardly a no-brainer... he was 33 and had one of the more pedestrian seasons of his career. Can you really blame the Yankees for not predicting that he'd have the best seasons of his career at 35 and 36?

This.

Hindsight is a bitch.

He made $20 million this season. Not sure what relevance the prior year has.
Ok. Judge probably gets similar numbers maybe more but he will eventually get a big contract like Betts will. It’s not like the yanks are going to be able to sign Cole to a 1 or 2 year deal where they don't need to plan payroll out 5 years.

Cole will join Price, Scherzer and Greinke as the next 200 mill pitcher. I'd be willing to bet he gets the largest contract ever for a pitcher.

Easy to say that now. Gray was (still is) a good pitcher that just didn't work out here, and Verlander looked like he was declining.

Besides, part of me wonders if the Yankees would have been able to turn Verlander around the way the Astros did.

The reality is that most of Cashman's starting pitching acquisitions have failed miserably.

Agree. I think Cashman was hesitant to pay Verlander's salary that year. But Verlander in NY would have been awesome and as a side benefit Kate Upton would be rooting for the Yankees even harder.
