Yup. It's more fear that they would lose the deal and have to hear the backlash from their fan base and media.

It's understandable. And while the Yankees are obviously the undisputed number one in New York, we all know there's a certain segment of fans that root for both teams, are unaffiliated, side with the better team, etc. Knowing that those fans exist as potential income to your team, I don't think it's wholly unreasonable to not want to go out of your way to help the other team succeed.

Which is totally understandable, but in this instance with Jay Bruce I think a deal could have definitely gotten done that benefited both sides. It's a shame it didn't transpire that way.

Thats kind of the point I was making.

Mets didn't have the chips to get those players unless they were hot after Ivan Nova. If the Yankees were in deep discussion with other teams (who did have those pieces) why would they even bother with the Mets (who didn't)?

Perhaps they called on other players, but its not like the yankees were fielding offers for everyone - They moved the guys who they were expected to move.

You mean like the elite prospects the Yankees got in return for Brian McCann? I'm sure, since he was available at the deadline and the Mets literally had nothing behind the dish, that they put in a call.

I'm also pretty sure they called about Nova too. Look at what happened to the rotation. Wheeler wasn't coming back. Matz was hurt. Harvey was out.

Both teams want the other to overpay when they are selling. It's natural. To say that the Mets are the only to blame on this is asinine.

To also say they didn't have pieces to make a trade is dumb. 2 top 50 prospects. Whether or not they were willing to give them up is another thing. I don't see anyway the Mets were trying to upgrade their bullpen with a Miller/Chapman, but someone like Nova, McCann, Beltran, etc. would have been upgrades for last season.

Two way street. Can't just blame the Mets for not making trades with the Yankees.

That trade happened later.

And no, they couldn't compete with what they had in their farm compared to what they got. Rosario alone wouldn't have gotten anything done (would have been a non starter for the Mets anyway) and Smith+Dunn don't sniff Chapman/Miller.

He was available at the deadline though. It was widely reported. Because it happened in the offseason, didn't mean they could have done it at the deadline.

I'm sure the Yankees would love to have McCann right now since Sanchez forgot how to catch a ball behind the plate.

McCann had a full no trade which was going to complicate things off the bat. That was always a move that was happening in the off season.

And I wish the Yankees had an awesome catcher like Travis D'arnaud.

He'd be your 2nd catcher on the roster besides Romine. I don't know if they've petitioned for the league to add a new position, but backstop sounds about right for Sanchez right now.

Lol, no. Sanchez has much higher potential than d'Arnaud. One slight down year in his 2nd season (1 and a half seasons really) doesn't change that.

Bruce had a limited no trade and the Yankees were on his veto list. But let's not let facts get in the way of our speculation.

Well this thread went to **** quickly. Can't we all get along and be better than the random *******s on the street? I mean come on.

I don't believe Bruce's NTC was in any way a major factor in a scenario such as this. I think he gladly waives it for just 40-50 games of going somewhere in the same city

Yankees got a great deal for McCann actually. Two young guys who are throwing 100MPH heat. McCann declined even further from last season.

He's a legitimate star. I don't think he's going to be a perennial 8-10 WAR player like Mike Trout though. Probably more in the 7 WAR range, which is still tremendous. There's also a matter of how his fielding will hold up over time since he's such a big guy. An awesome athlete but I wouldn't be surprised to see some deterioration there within the next few seasons.

Doubt he'll be a 7 WAR player. Harper even has only done that once and maybe twice if he gets there this year. Judge may have the odd year or two around there but I'd expect more around 4-5

--------

And Romine sucks and I don't know why people think he's good. He's legitimately NEVER had a positive WAR. This season is actually tied for his career worst. Defense doesn't matter much is you cannot hit at all. He shouldn't even be in the majors.

Maybe maybe not but he had a chance to change his veto list in July and didn't.

There was talk when Bruce was acquired that he wasn't the type that enjoyed the spotlight and that he wasn't enamored with NYC.

His BABIP was well over 400. Regression is a *****.

I get that, but how much of it has to do with "balls in play?" He strikes out three times every night.

Also, I didn't think it would be this bad. He's looking like a "more strikeouts than batting average points" guy again.

Sure, I didn't expect him to keep hitting .330 but I also didn't expect him to strike out 330 times (so to speak)

I doubt Judge ever strikes out less than 120-130 times a year. He's just that sort of hitter and nowadays it's rare for anyone who hits 30 or more homers consistently to strikeout below 100 times a year. There was a time where 80 was considered good now if you're near 100 that's great. Most low strikeout guys now either don't have power or rarely walk and are low OBP/OPS guys.
