Power rankings before the offseason is strange imo.ESPN's 2025 power rankings are out. They have the NYY 9th and the Mets 18th.

Cashman is still in charge so it will fail.Yankees will have a huge shakeup. It will be interesting.
If I’m not mistaken those numbers include 80+ million not on roster for Mets and don't include ohtanis 70 million deferred salary. Don't know about yanks. That's the difference between the Dodgers and Yankees (and Mets).
The Plucky, Upstart, Underdog Mets: 306M-318M in payroll
The Cheap, Tightening the Purse String, Moneyball Yankees: 303M-309M in payroll
The Just Bought a WS, Spend All Day Dodgers: 241M-250M in payroll
Yeah, there is a little bit of ambiguity with the total numbers. That is why I even put up a spread. To me, the point still stands though, which is:If I’m not mistaken those numbers include 80+ million not on roster for Mets and don't include ohtanis 70 million deferred salary. Don't disagree but that's still a $150 millionish swing. The difference between new and old ownership is that Cohen was willing to eat the $80+ on Scherzer and Verlander in order to trade them for good prospects rather than do a salary dump for a bag of pucks. Worked out pretty well for Scherzer who got a ring out of it. It also allowed the Mets to bounce back from a 101 win season in 2022 to get to the 2024 NLCS.Yeah, there is a little bit of ambiguity with the total numbers. That is why I even put up a spread. One team spends a lot and has been doing so poorly and looks to continue to do poorly do soy for the foreseeable future.
Another team spends a lot and has also done so poorly but came to the realization they did of that and now are trying to course correct.
And the last team spends a lot and has done so smartly and will likely continue to reap the benefits of it.
Yankees will be getting $15M for the Rays using their stadium. They can finally afford Soto's new deal.Hurricane-stricken Tampa Bay Rays to play 2025 season at Yankees' spring training field in Tampa

Just wanted to say, that's my point though. Cohen did the old George move. Threw a whole bunch of money at great but aged vets, throwing caution to the wind, but he was smart enough to come to the realization that it wasn't working. Made baseball moves and now is trying to build an actual team while using his wealth the right way. At least that's what seems is happening.Don't disagree but that's still a $150 millionish swing. looks like premium outfield seating. Sort of like the Mets party deck
I thought there might be a holdout in ohtani being unanimous. He is the first full time DH to win MVP.Ohtani also.
It's a luxury tax, where you pay a certain tax rate depending on which tier you fall in and how many seasons you've been in it. But essentially you can spend whatever you want in baseball as long as you're willing to pay the associated tax. It's why the league implemented the "Cohen Tax" which was a new bracket with the highest penalties meant ostensibly to stop Cohen from spending all his money.Seeking an answer for a question from someone that's more knowledgeable about the salary cap system in the MLB.
I understand a lot of Ohtani's contract is deferred money, but how on God's green earth can they afford Snell?
If they land Sasaki on top of that, they're going to be in Astros territory for how much I dislike them.
