OT: MLB Thread 2024

I fondly remember the days when a good number of pitchers could actually hit.
Define your definition of a good number because woof, overall they were always bad except, of course, for a few outliers.

For me, I'd rather pitchers spend their time concentrating on what they do best and what got them to MLB rather than a skill, where if they stopped pitching young, they wouldn't have even been looked at in their draft as a viable position player to make it to MLB.

The lack of knowledge is shocking. Many MLB pitchers were some of the best athletes and hitters on their pre-MLB teams.

The DH and pitcher's hitting are totally unrelated. There is much more to baseball (and sports) appreciation and knowledge than stats and it's not reflected in this thread. I agree to disagree. Have a great day!

It’s very funny to see that pitcher’s hitting peaked sometime during the Teddy Roosevelt administration lol

In 1988 and 89, Ron Darling as a pitcher came close to matching Rey Ordonez's nominal season batting output.

the only good thing to ever come out of pitchers hitting was Colon's home run. That's it. Next question.
"Some pitchers hit good back in the day!"

Mike Hampton had a 67 OPS+ and struck out five times more than he walked. That's a pitcher hitting good.

Degrom and Gooden also were good hitters
DeGrom had a 35 OPS+ and Gooden had a 32 OPS+.

You would never stick in the majors hitting like that as a position player, unless maybe you were a bomb ass defensive catcher, but then, even Jeff Mathis had a 48 OPS+.

The guys everyone brings up as good-hitting pitchers simply don't hit at an MLB level, so it kind of proves the point.
