Now that I hear all (or at least most) of the details, the one that stands out most for me is the opt out after 5 years.....don't know why, but I get the feeling that's going to become very important soon.

There’s two parts to it. Soto can opt out after 5 years but the Mets can also void that opt out by paying him $4 million more per year for the rest of his contract.

Ill be real though, I couldn’t imagine what kinda 5 seasons Soto would need to have to feel confident opting out of this contract lol.

Trade Stroman, sign Burnes and Fried to have a top flight rotation. They will push for Sasaki but it's pretty much set that he's joining the Dodgers.

Then in the field sign Hernandez, Walker and Bregman. Just go all since the Yankess won't be rebuilding

I want Juan Soto to opt out in 5 years because that means he was worth more than 50M a season, which means he's an MVP level player for probably all 5 of them.

Give me the absolute prime of the best pure hitter in baseball and there is a chance he could be a Met for the rest of his career. Cohen coughs and makes 4 million dollars so I don't think he'll have an issue paying that much more in 5 years time, so long as Soto is as good as he has been.

If I was a Mets fan I would really appreciate Cohen as the owner. As a Yankee fan I'm fine with Soto going elsewhere for that large a contract BUT Cohen being willing to spend as he does is all you can ask of a team owner as a fan.

Now with that said as a fan I wish pro sports would limit contracts to 5 or 6 years. I say that for all sports. I think ultra long deals ends up bad too often.

Yeah if Soto opts out in five years it's because he hit 250 homers in that stretch with a 180 OPS+ or something. I'm all for that.

It’d either be that Soto becomes Barry Bonds or the Saudi’s depose Manfred and inject oil money into the MLB raising the league minimum salary to 100 million dollars.

One thing I’ll say, as a Yankee fan, I’m jealous of the fun that Mets fans have had the last year. Between the OMG stuff, the grimace, and then the post season run they went on, it’s clear a Mets fans are having a lot more fun than us Yankee fans. I respect that the Yankees want to be seen as a “professional” organization, but at the end of the day you still want to have fun being a fan of your favorite team.

Being a Yankee fan feels like a job. Everything is so corporate, and I can’t stand the arrogance of achievements that are now pretty old.

have a lot of respect for this post. too often yanks fans are completely unable to admit any fault with the yankee way, or fan experience.

there's no guarantee the mets win a single pennant let alone WS - dodgers are still the dodgers, braves/phils, etc. AL is a far lighter path.

What you might discover is that it's fun being the underdog - winning in spite of not having Soto will feel pretty good if it happens. (Inverse is true for Mets fans - expectation is a heavy thing)

I wonder if Soto is going to move out of his mom's house now that he has some money.

I think what none of us appreciate is that Juan Soto is a huge family guy. He doesn't drink smoke go to clubs etc. He has a big family and spends a lot of time with them. There are differences in how the mets and yankees treat player families. One of the SNY programs was talking about how Alex Cohen made the mets a very family friendly destination which may be a big reason (aside form the money obviously) why Soto went to the Mets.

I am a yankees fan but i'll admit, it was infinitely more fun watching the Mets this last post season. The games were more exciting and it was just overall more fun to watch. Besides a couple of the CLeveland games, the Yanks games were just whatever overall, just businesslike

It'll be a good deal for like 4 years, maybe 5

I agree. Likely spreading out dollars over term to keep the per year charge down, $27.75M AAV
For sure it's being used to bring aav down here. Believe they originally wanted to do 7 but probably couldn't get money to work.

Stil not ideal, but it's a start I guess

I feel like the Mets are going to go hard after Crochet. They have enough to get him and it would be great for them, and right up Stearns' alley, to get a cost-controlled guy. Would also make it easier to justify bringing back Alonso. I know money isn't an issue for us but I think Cohen is a smart guy and recognizes that keeping the payroll within reason helps the team on a number of fronts.

With that said I also wouldn't be shocked if they threw a ton of money at Burnes.

Hopefully they get Roki too, he’s cost controlled, right? He can only get like international pool money, somewhere between $5m and $7m or something?
