The Mets are a little brother that just had a massive growth spurt. Steve Cohen has absolutely changed the game.

There’s a world where this isn’t the worst thing for the Yankees. They can spread that money around and put a more balanced team out on the field.

The problem I have is I don’t trust Cashman and Boone.

Hal stopping at 16/760 is fine. Cohen was going to outbid everyone regardless.

Soto saw that the Yankees are basically just Cole/Judge in the regular season, and Judge chokes in the playoffs.

Mets gonna be must-watch TV.

Yeah but their larger pattern of not spending is why they are that way. There are holes on this roster that haven't been adequately filled since the 2009 team.

They'll spend selectively when they determine it's good ROI. They have no interest in filling out the roster.

Another problem is that there's just not that much available right now.

Arenado is already declining. Santander couldn't get on base if he was a military general. Walker is...fine I guess.

What are the chances Alonso returns?

Bring him back! Let's go full juggernaut baby!

I read yankees offered pretty much the same amount over 16 years. That extra year may have been the deal breaker.

You feel like at that age, you'd almost want the extra year. Is he expecting to get a multi-year deal at age 40? If it's me, and I have an inkling that I'd want to play a long time, the extra contract year means I have pretty good odds that I can play that extra year if I want to.

It feels like he just wanted to go to the Mets. :dunno:

The Yankees made this bed. Cohen's Mets have shown themselves to be what the Yankees used to be -- a team willing to do whatever it takes. Granted, they just spent $800m on an outfielder when their rotation got swallowed whole in the NLCS, but you get the feeling they'll at least try to address that.

The Yankees have holes that would make most teams in sports blush, especially for a team that isn't rebuilding. They haven't had an everyday LF since Brett Gardner. They haven't had a solid, ride or die 3B that you can pencil in for multiple years since f***ing A-ROD!!!!

Soto knew, like we all did, that if he signed with the Yankees, that would be the Christmas present for the kiddies and it would be him and Judge with the same holes for several years.

Who would you rather play for?

I was being nice. Pitchers hit .103 and slugged .140 the last time they hit.
There were some crazy posts about the DH last week. The designated hitter rule was adopted by the AL in 1973. In the 1972 MLB season, the average pitcher batted around a .190 batting average.

Now the Mets have to sign Alonso because money isn’t real. Apparently Cohen will just invent a new type of dollar if needed.

This is still wild for me as a Mets fan. This franchise used to consider guys coming back from the IL in July as their big acquisitions. Now they’re giving 3/4 of a billion dollars to a guy who can’t field lmao.

All in all, I’m happy. Dizzying stuff. But happy.

4th team in 5 years. Got his money. Save this post in case I'm wrong. I believe Soto's stats will drop from last season. Maybe as soon as next season.

He's on his fourth team in five years for one simple reason, they knew they couldn't sign him. Understandable from the Nats perspective. Understandable from the Yankees perspective (you'd have to figure acquiring him means you have an excellent shot at signing him, and they were right, they just came in a very close second).

Not sure why the Padres would trade big assets for a guy like that though when they aren't gonna go top dollar to re-sign him.

...

As for the Mets, they need Pete back and some pitching, lets do this.

Just saw Dick Allen made the HOF. I really hate when guys getvin after they die. Allen passed away in 2020. Seems like such a shame he never will know. Dave Parker also got in. Glad to see that.

Glad to see Parker get honored. With the awfulness of the Mets I would go to shea when the pirates were in town in the late 70s with parker, Stargell and ex met john milner.

the idea is that it's a privilege to don the jersey... that every player wants to be a part of the yankee legacy. it's a way of saying "if he doesn't want to be here, he can't handle it, he's less valuable and we never wanted him anyway."
It's the same lie like everyone wants to play at madison square garden.

That's the thing, he was drafted by the nats, traded to the Padres and then traded to the Yankees. This is the first time he got to choose for himself. Teams have different cultures. Can imagine the yankees allowing the OMG schtick after every homer? If you're signing for potentially 15 years you want to go where you feel most comfortable, all else being equal. Sometimes the yankees offer enough to get around that (CC sabathia for example). But there are a lot more rich owners willing to spend these days.

Regarding his stats dropping - it wouldn't surprise me consideing the differences in the mets vs yankee lineup supporting him.

Now that I hear all (or at least most) of the details, the one that stands out most for me is the opt out after 5 years.....don't know why, but I get the feeling that's going to become very important soon.
