Great stuff. Got to catch the game during class.

I had to mute my stream, obviously, so I definitely enjoyed the quiet screen where Keith was enthusiastically showing the camera his hybrid mittens.

First start of the season but what I found slightly interesting is that Sale's fastball topped out at 92-93.

Bird needs to break Bonds' HR record otherwise people will bash him for striking out or even taking a first pitch strike.

Bit of hyperbole there, no? He's been godawful since entering the league and the only reason he's still getting chances is because of hype and epic preseason performances

I'm joking. But let's not bash him in game #1.

Yep you got the Yankees pegged. They actually believe in the hype (huh?) and give out starting assignments solely based on that and preseason stats....

Anyways, I never remember Bird being over-hyped when he was drafted or when he came through the system. He hit and showed patience at the plate at every level and then when he came up for the final 40+ games of his age 22 season, he hit to a 137 wRC+ along with a .268 ISO.

Look, the guy has been injured the last few years. It sucks for him and for the Yankees. It might have derailed his career for good. He keeps on getting chances because, despite the injuries, the Yanks think the talent is there, he's still relatively young, and he's cheap (and still has an option left).

I like you.

Post more.

Listen, I want him to succeed as much as anyone, but he's done nothing but disappoint. I know the injuries aren't his fault, but it is what it is. For the record, I'm not one of those idiot fans that would ever boo him

He's 26 going on 27.... time is running out. Hopefully he's got over whatever it is that has held him back up to this point, because we know the talent is there

He was taking pus. 92 down the middle while ahead in the count. I get that it was Day One but he wasn’t protecting the plate at all.

He barely has an MLB resume, so the “It’s only Opening Day” excuse usually applies to guys without his lineup protection or joke of a slash line:

.214/.302/.438/.740/0.3 WAR

I have always been pro-Bird and I’m still pulling for him, but he looked like an overmatched teenager yesterday.

Talent is definitely there for Bird. Big lefty bat. We need that. Need him to figure it out.

Yesterdays ABs were pathetic. They were timid. He needs to get up there and attack the ball right now. He is batting 7th. Not in the middle of the heart of the order. He is going to get first pitch fastballs. He needs to change his approach when he is preparing in the on deck circle. His patience is great as part of his normal approach but these arent normal times for him. He needs to show the Yankees why they should keep him when Hicks comes back, while demoting a reliever instead and to do that he needs to drive the baseball

If he swung on that first pitch and grounded out people would be calling him dumb for not working the count.
