I don't see how they can have such a subpar defender at third base long term.

I'm not under the impression that they would. I see this as his last chance to show something defensively.

Although, the Arenado extension may throw a wrench into plans.

I would have just signed Machado. If waiting for Arenado was their plan, then it was completely dumb.
