I dont get how Larry Walker still isnt a hall of famer
Happy to finally see Edgar in though

Mantle, DiMaggio, Gehrig too.

To say Mariano is the most deserving is a bit silly.
Damn you guys are rough. Of course not compared to Ruth, Gehrig, etc. Compared to those elected now. No enhancement, stud into his 40s. I would say Bonds and Clemens earned it before the juice but tarnished themselves and writers will continue to hold it against them.

There's also the idiot who didn't submit a ballot as protest of Rivera. At least he didn't submit a blank ballot.

I had the Michael Kay show on in the background today and they mentioned that that guy actually reversed his decision and DID submit a ballot and it DID have Mariano on it.

I don't think anybody wanted to be the dick to not vote for Mariano because of the type of guy he was on top of being the best at his position.

Mickey Mantle got circa 88% of the vote when he was elected. Joe D. didn't make it in until his third (!) year and had 44% and 69% his first two years respectively....What in The ever living f***???

Hehe, suck it Boston sports reporter whose name I forget that thinks Mariano shouldn't even be in the HOF!

Something something Colorado
For me, that's just like using steroids but not actually cheating. And I don't really care about the steroids thing.

He had a big jump this year. I think his last year is next year and he still probably falls short, but for me it's hard to say no to him, Coors or not.

Next years HOF voting will be very interesting. The only addition to the ballot of note will be Derek Jeter and nobody currently on the ballot is very close % wise to induction. Unless somebody makes a big jump it's entirely possible Jeter goes in alone. Then again that would be a lot of empty ballots so if there is a time for a guy to make a big jump, it may just be next year.

Baseball Prospectus did their Top 101.

You are being redirected...

Gimenez was 38 and Alonso 40.

Loaisiga was 64 and Florial 66.

Sheffield was 50 and Kelenic 63.

Long didn't place, nor did Stowers. None of the guys the Mets traded did, either, other than Kelenic.

Late reply but well deserved for Mo. Watching the video when he got hurt in Spring Training that year left me in tears. (Arods reaction is very memorable from that). But then he came back and was the best reliever in baseball again. TBH he couldve still played another 5 or so seasons.

He is the GOAT, no one will match his consistency with 1 pitch. When I was younger I didn't want blowout games because I wanted to see Mo rack up the saves.

on Mo - I'm a Mets fan but I have a soft spot for him. My wife used to work in higher ed at Iona a long time ago, and Mo's son played baseball there. They lived locally as well. The family was very involved in fund raisers and college funding events. I met them a few times - just really great people. He and his wife helped her so many times.

I know the argument about closers and their value relative to other players, and I agree, but he was just so much better than anyone for 20 years. The gap between him and his fellow relievers was always laughably large.

Good dude. Good for him.

I think he really changed the game as well. The closer role became such a HUGE deal once he became so dominant. It was more than just his value to the team too. His presence in the bullpen effected how their opponents managed their games against the Yankees for years

Let's not overlook Trevor Hoffman in the "changing the game" conversation. He started doing his thing right around the time Rivera did. Rivera was obviously the best, but Hoffman was also amazingly good. Those were the only two guys I remember (I may be forgetting some) that would fairly consistently get Cy Young and MVP votes. I think the combination of the two revolutionized the game. They opened a door for Wagner, Papelbon, K-Rod, etc.

Good point.

I also think that has a lot with Edgar Martinez going in. Especially with David Ortiz's candidacy coming up soon.

I'm surprised Mussina didn't get a mention. I think him getting in is going to change the narrative of what a HoF pitcher looks like going forward. CC with 3k Ks and 250-260 wins is looking like a future hall of famer now. Mussina had a better war but their other stats are comparable.
