Reds are trying to extend Gray before the trade. If they can. Would that increase the return? I'm assuming they have two deal in place, one with an extended Gray and one without.

I imagine the trade is done as advertised if Gray says yes to extension but if he says no then I'm guessing deal falls through.

Analytics prove long term contracts are not good.

Harper rejected the deal. Im sure he will make more than that under 2-3 shorter term deals over the next 10 years barring injury

I don't know about that comp. Like MLB Pipeline for instance had Alonso #58 and Long nowhere to be found. long seems to be a fine prospect but I don't think he's quite to the level of Alonso. And Alonso isn't even a blue chip guy or anything. There's also the fact that Alonso is either the 1 or 2 prospect in a weak system, so the Mets moving him would be much more notable than the Reds moving Long, who I have seen anywhere from 5-10, from their deep, top-third system.
In Fangraphs valuation tool, Shed is 71st while Alonso is 67th.

An Update to Prospect Valuation

I understand that move may be a bit steeper for the Mets since they don't have a deep farm system. But that is what would be comparable value.

Comparable according to that list, not comparable to others. You yourself initially said he was a fringe-100 prospect, no? I haven't seen any lists where Alonso was on the fringes. He's generally right in the middle.

But whatever. If you think they're in the same tier then so be it. I don't think the value is quite comparable but it's totally subjective.

Apparently there is a 72 hour negotiation window for the Reds to extend Gray that expires late tomorrow. Not sure if the reported Long and a pick deal was with or without an extension.

Long is rated higher by some also because of the position that he plays. Middle infielders with pop are at premium.

Mind you if anyone is a fringe 100 guy it's Long and not Alonso.

'No deal yet', 'some optimism', 'may look elsewhere'. So Gray may or may not be traded, and he might or might bring back any return. Stay tuned.

Next week the rumor will be 'Yanks so happy with Gray's offseason they decided not to trade him and he's expected to compete for a roster spot'.

What a lolfest this offseason is.

Maybe it was youthful naivete, maybe it was actually different back then, but insider tweets do not move the needle for me at all anymore.
