The problem I have with this is that Machado is an awfully big commitment to just replace somebody.
But he isn’t just replacing someone either.

He is still a fantastic pure hitter. He is a great defender at 3B. He is only 26. A 7 year deal, heck an 8 year deal taking him to age 34/35 is not something to stress about. He has at least 5 great years left in him. Maybe 6. The extra 2 years being just “good” will all be worth it if we come away with a WS or obviously multiple ones being the real goal.

Umm Gray plus prospect for MadBum? I think thats fair. Giants get younger. Great park for Sonny Gray to pitch in. MadBum is a rental. Gray could have great success there.

I don't see the Giants trading Bumgarner for gray and a prospect unless maybe it's a top top prospect.

They'll call and ask for Torres, Cashman will laugh, and that's as far off the ground as this will get.

Loved this read if it hasn't been posted before:
Adam Ottavino Rebuilt Himself in a Vacant Manhattan Storefront

Hopefully the Ottavino from 2018 is the real deal going forward. When his slider is on....

...Filthy

I think they trade Gray to get back under the 2nd threshold and that's it for the off-season. The only way they would blow past it again is if Machado/Harper came on a sweatheart/shorter term deal. Don't see them trading Andujar unless they go all in on Machado. He's young, cost effective and they believe in him on both sides of the ball.

Picking up that one more starter at the deadline is still on the table.

On this I agree with RGY that trading for #1 pitcher at deadline would be way more expensive in assets than if they tried to do it now. So, go after Kluber now if he's available and you want him. Have him for the whole season and be three games ahead of the Sox at the deadline, looking to round out your roster, rather then three games behind looking for that elusive elite starter.

I do agree with you regarding clutchness. I remember seeing a couple of analytic studies done on it and it varied from year to year for both individual players and teams. Now, I will say human nature would lead some players to just be more relaxed in high pressure situations than others but man that's hard to predict when setting up a roster. I remember reading a couple ppl on here saying they weren't worried about the Sox last year because they were chokers in the playoffs the last few years and their bubble would burst once the post season started. Derp.

Very interesting....

I dont like it because we would have to trade even more internal assets to make this happen.

This in addition to the more important goal of saving said assets to acquire a top of the rotation SP.

Its why Machado makes more sense. You are going to pay Arenado and trade assets. And he is a year older than Machado.

The only way Arenado gains more leverage over Machado is if his next contract is less term and AAV but I do not see that happening

@RGY So they pass on Machado only to turn around and trade prospects for Arenado this year and then sign him to a nominally less long term deal, or just wait till next year to sign him for that same deal. I too think that would be a terrible choice between players and terrible asset management...but I think there's nothing to this. Just a bunch of reporters postulating. Oh and here's where Machado's career sits among others:
