yankees have been crippled by contracts like that in the past....Canos a great player, too much money in 1 players pocket. even the yankees have a finite amount they can spend. that money can go into 2 or 3 VERY good player rather than 1 elite player.

so u think they would have done it?

I think they would have too. You don't pay a guy 240 million to jog around the basepaths.

And i dislike the constant A-Rod comparisons with Cano. A-rod won 3 MVPS, was undoubtedly the best player in the league and was (technically is, but the roids discredit him) one of the best players in the history of the game. Had the roids thing never come up, he would have arguably been the best ever.

Cano is nowhere near that. Is he a great player, yep, hall of famer, likely, but he's nowhere near the force A-Rod was at his peak. He's never hit 50 home runs, he's never won an MVP, he's just not at the level. Cano is elite, A-Rod was legendary.

But there's no way you make a statement by giving a guy like Cano that contract, where he is cleary becoming THE GUY on your team, when he seems to have no prescene in the locker room, is always lacksadaiscal, both on the field and off and NEVER seems to hustle.

People will argue that he does hustle and it's just how he looks, but having watched the guy for nearly a decade, it's a fact. You're taught from the day you start playing (i played competitive ball for like 20 years) that you always put your head down and run hard. Every single day. I remember one time i didn't on an in field pop up and my high school coach pulled me from the game.

The thing that makes me happiest about what the Yankees have done is the guys they've brought in are not only great players but CHARACTER guys. McCann is fierce, Ellsbury is a gamer and Beltran is one of the most clutch performers of all time. It's going to be a completely different dynamic than last season.

Beltran will likely predominantly be used as a DH.

Right now the OF is Soriano, Gardner, and Ellsbury.

Choo moves Soriano to the bench. The Yankees cut Wells. Have Ichiro and Soriano on the bench.

They could also look to move Gardner for SP since they likely won't be bidding for Tanaka anymore.

Your OF will either be:

Choo-Gardner-Ellsbury
or
Choo-Ellsbury-Ichiro

with Beltran as DH and occasional OF reps.

Beltran said he doesn't want to primarily DH. He's also a damn good fielder. There's no way he sits on the bench and does that most of the year. He'll DH some games, but most of them he will be in RF. My assumption is, if Choo is signed, that Gardner will be packaged with Sanchez and some other stuff for a starting pitcher.

Gardner had a 4.2 WAR last year which is pretty damn good.

agreed Yanks did fine job with plan B, this, was just for discussion

while ellsbury, beltran and mccann are indeed stars, these players remind me as guys we would have or target in the glory years, very good two way players with heart and determination to win who want to be here.

Jeter is on his last legs. He'll be gone soon. Rivera/Pettite/Posada are gone. You're losing your leadership group. I think that the tough gritty players that were acquired will go a lot further towards enhancing the clubhouse than a guy like Cano who just has an easy care-free attitude.

Disappointed to see Tron as a Yankee. Not as disappointed as I was to see him as a Cardinal, though. Now I might have to root for the Yanks in the POs if they make it.

It's interesting to note that despite a plethora of "can't miss" catching prospects, the Yankees have missed on all of them. Hopefully Romine can be a decent back up, and Sanchez can break the trend.

The farm really needs to start developing someone somewhere.

Prospects are no guarantee. A lot comes down to luck too. Look at the Mariners. They've been picking high in recent years, and don't have much to show for it.

Yankees have some outfielders, but with the Ellsbury and Beltran signings, look for those guys to be traded.

They certainly aren't a guarantee, but just like in hockey… some teams just do a much better job of selecting, then developing.

This team has brought up nothing of any consequence in YEARS.

we have the worst scouting and development of any team in the league and its not even close. out of position players that had to go through the draft we've had gardner and jackson in the past 15+ years that became relevant players in MLB.

There was Dioner Navarro, who has had a pretty good MLB career, and Jesus Montero who still might prove to be a decent MLB bat... just not at catcher. I don't consider that "missing on all of them" and I'm not sure what you mean by a "plethora of can't miss catching prospects".

The system needs to do better for sure but catching has been one area where they've at least been above average. Not many systems have a Gary Sanchez or even a JR Murphy.

I was talking about the development in general. Where are the killer b's? Where's the capable infielder or two that can go play second/third or even be a defensively strong super sub hitting .270. ? If they could fill a couple of lineup spots from within, then they could use money (which I guess isn't much of a problem anyway), or some of the good young players to go and find the SP that they desperately need. I just find it baffling that they can't seem to turn out players from within with ANY regularity. St Louis is a prime example of a team that runs like a well oiled machine. Asking the Yankees to match that may be unrealistic, but their system just seems barren. I'm surprised that the Yankees even sit down for the draft, because no one they pick seems to ever rise to the majors. You have to seriously question scouting and player development.

I only mentioned the catching position, because Montero was supposed to be a middle of the order bat, and it was always spoken of as a great position of strength in the Yankees farm system. Navarro was a guy they signed 15 years ago, so that's a bit of a reach. I'm hopeful that Sanchez can develop into something nice.

I would say Cano and Chien Ming Wang are guys we developed through the system. Wang's injury ruined him, but he was solid for a while.

They probably would have picked someone else, and we'd be angry.

I read an article that they had him penciled in...and after the Angels used their first pick on an OF they felt good about their chances. I guess the real question is would Boston have still selected Reymond Fuentes if Trout was on the board at 28.

That's pretty interesting…

Just to clarify, I'm not knocking them for not finding a superstar like Trout. No one can expect you to churn out superstars, but you should be able to find guys that can play adequately at the MLB level.

And the other interesting part is how the Angels ended up with that pick.

# 25 - Los Angeles Angels receive this pick as compensation for the New York Yankees signing Mark Teixeira.

Yeah the Angels had picks 24 and 25 that year. They got 24 from the Mets for signing K-Rod. Good job Minaya.

People need to actually pay attention to the farm system, instead of listening to some beat reporter that has never seen any of these guys play.
While the Killer B's were hyped, I never expected Betances to really work out. He has the stuff but his height was a huge factor, and still is. Brackman was a reach at the time. He was always a boom or bust. Another tall pitcher. The Yankees wanted Porcello but the Tigers took him the pick or two before.
Manny Banuelos is 22 and coming off TJS. Contrary to NY radio host and beat reporters say, he's far from a bust.
