this dude gotta go. He's not worth his current contract and his ass will want a raise.

Marner 100 times out of 100. Mitch has his faults, but flopping around like a fish ain't one of them.

I think people misconstrue why so many are okay with him moving on... for me, mainly it is about the team cap structure. Sure, his attitude comes off as obnoxious or whatever, but I don't think he is that way, and I do think he cares probably more than anyone in that room, too much sometimes to the point that he cripples himself.

I think it has been proven that 4 top heavy forwards do not get it done, so one has to go. Won't be 34, won't be 91. I think Marner is probably better than Nylander, in fact I am sure of it, but you can only pay one of them imo as that cap money needs to feed the rest of the lineup (defence especially). I think the team gets more of a return for Marner. If, at the end of the day Nylander is the one that goes, I think the team is in a better position... Tre has himself a full blown dilemma!

Don't forget that Tavares has 1 more year. So Marner's deal would not expire until Tavares, meaning year 1 of his new deal we have that 11M of cap space. We can keep all three if we wanted.

Right. Problem is, are we convinced that it works with this core? I think that is the problem more than the money at this point.

Why would we want to keep all three? They simply can’t get it done

Always did and always will say Leafs did it wrong. You need to build from the goalie out! You need great defenseman! At least two. And if Treliving has his way he will trade one of these guys upfront.

Not sure moving on from one of the core 4 would accomplish anything.
I’m looking forward to the end of the golden girls as a whole.

It’s simple we’re paying 4 forwards for 3 forwards worth of work so once Tavares is gone we can add to the team and see the difference
Ya it’s starting to look like the entire 7 years of tavares will be 7 wasted years of what should have been an awesome rebuild

Maybe but we sure aren’t accomplishing anything with this core intact

No I would prefer to make a change to the core myself. I am just saying it is not forcing our hand due to money, we have options.

Because the issue has been having 4 forwards make 40 million on an 82 million cap. Matthews 13.25, Nylander 10.5, Marner 11.5 at most is 35 on a 90 cap. Much more manageable and if we get term on those, each year gets easier.

I think Tavares takes a heavy discount. Like 3-4 million AAV.

I feel like the Essential 2 to keep are Matthews and Nylander. Marner and Tavares are $22 million on skates that can be Marner and Tavares... or anything else.

Tavares can and will likely stay given he’s the captain and will take a hefty pay cut on his next deal. Mitch barring a massive behavioural turn in the playoffs can take a hike, he’s not worth the pay raise he’ll want here.

It’ll be tough but I’d rather eat shit on the cap for one season next year than lose Nylander and be forced to keep Marner because he’s our only option.

Lol I love how people are fans of the team but know nothing about the players. If you listen to any podcasts, interviews or watch the pre-season TSN hits on YouTube you’d immediately understand this is a horrible and wrong take. Marner is 100% the glue guy in the room for the Leafs. He gets along with everyone. Again I don't know why we allow posts like this when we have anecdotal evidence that proves otherwise. Many current players and former players have gone on record about how much they love having him as a teammate. Look at how many current and former Leafs were at his wedding. The fans don't really like him which is fair and their right, but that sentiment is not shared in the locker room. People just need to accept that.

Didn't Domi just go on record last week saying how much he loved playing with Mitch and it brough him back to the London days?

The leafs in general don't come to anyone's aid lol. It's only the newer leafs that are bringing that attitude. Knies and Domi really.

He’s a little brother class clown desperate for attention but that doesn’t mean he’s an effective glue guy. That’s the last type of person I’d want to be around in a high stakes high pressure situation.

ok? no one cares. you don't play for the leafs, so who cares who you'd want to be around haha

Marner definitely comes across as a classic younger brother personality type... precocious talent, a little cocky, mischievous and fun loving, I'm sure well loved in the room. But when trouble goes down, those Grade 6 boys are going to take your lunch money.

Really didn't look great last night ... Leafs 3-0 win in LA ...

Maybe because LA plays a heavy game?

The Leafs did shut down the Kings, I'm sure he helped in that regard.

With marner and Nylander both on the PK, seems like there should always be a threat for a shortie.

He and Matthews will probably be big against the Ducks tonight. Jan 3, 2024.

Yeah, he needs to find a bit of the shark mentality that Gretzky used to have. You don't have to be overly physical to be zoned in and tough and confident in yourself and your abilities. Marner has seemed to overthink himself all too often and get too cutesy when a simple play will do - and a string of consistent, simple, and effective plays win playoff series a lot more than an occasional fancy one. Generally he just needs to choose to shoot more often.

I still think that, as their best all around player, Marner is the Leafs engine so they need him to get going.

Tavares wont be taking less than 6-7 and could come in around 8M

Stamkos, Kopitar, Giroux, Malkin, Backstrom etc

Look at what all those guys got or will get for their final deals then factor Tavares age and rising cap

If Tavares want anything over 5m then let him find it in free agency
He is certainly slowing down with his skating
If I’m Tre I’m taking half or more of his cap hit and putting it into defenders

You will be shocked when you see what JT is gonna take .. his ONLY goal today is to win a Cup as Leafs captain and then retire into da sunset .. thats it thats all and thats direct from da source .. he won't even play next year if we win this season
