Marner on D might be a future way to generate offense when it's too early to pull the goalie but you're down a couple and need to get back in the game. Marner, Reilly, Matthews, Willy, and _____, might be worth looking at.

Just when you think the proclamations on HF can’t get any more absurd, along comes the comments about moving Marner to play defence.

Let’s try to think it through logically - - an elite offensive forward who has struggled defensively and isn’t the least bit physical changing positions to become a defenceman?

Might as well suggest moving Marner to be the goalie. He made a great save with the next empty earlier this week and imagine the offence he could provide as a goalie.

Hurrr durrr, he’d be the highest scoring goalie in league history!

During the 9 games (8W and 1L) Willy has 7G 10A, Mitch has 1G and 15A, and Matty has 11A 4A.

Willy also has the only short-handed goal, the only OT goal, and 3 GWG.

Haha It's a Marner thread!

Been loving Marner's game lately. He's not playing the overly cute game we sometimes see. High skill plays and really controlling the game.

He truly is a unicorn in regular season play, but I have not liked him at all when it comes to the playoffs.

One more go at it, and if nothing comes of it - trade him.

Marner-Knies was definitely a fun goal, but the hope is that translates into a low blocker no fuss insurance goal in an elimination game Toronto wins in a couple months time. When things ramp just be effective. Don’t need style points.

Your avatar had lots of style points too. Just enjoy the moment, everyone knows we need to see jam come playoff time, these qualifiers are baked in. What I’ve liked these last couple months, the board work, the protecting the puck, always on the right side of the puck, that should translate if he can stay out of his own head.

He's not doing it for "style points". He's doing it to increase the chance of the puck going in the net.

Marner has 18 points in 9 unless you are counting his sick day

Whoa. What a difference a few months make. People really wanted him traded?

How many other teams have a playmaker like him? I don't even know what TOR would get back in a trade that would make you feel better for not having him?
Marner isn't getting traded. He will be re-signed hopefully this summer at around $12.5 and eventually will be a Leaf for life. You don't trade these kinds of players.

Since you didn't reply to anyone we can't see who proclaimed that Marner should be moved to play defence but I'm pretty sure that no one said what you're getting all emotional about. What some people have said is that under certain circumstances it might be a great idea to put Marner on defence because he can hold his own. But you keep on proclaiming your absurd takes.

Marner on D resulted in Willy setting up Matty for his goal.

For that matter, Willy is usually playing the point on the PP, so it's not that odd an idea.

Please do elaborate - - under what circumstance do you think
It’s a good idea to have Marner play defence?

Bearing in mind that he’s never played the position for a single game at the pro level.

If this is aimed at me, I'm in no way suggesting he play defence on a regular basis; I'm only thinking it's worth looking at in basically one situation -- late in the game when we need some offense.

Did you watch last nights game? Are you stupid? How about as someone else suggested lateish in the game but too early too early to pull the goalie for extra offense or how out the simplest example of the PP. Jebus man, think.

Let’s not confuse playing the point during a man advantage with “playing defence”.

All the names are interchangeable. I personally think Marner has stood out the most from a dynamic perspective (over the last stretch). Like I said above I don't challenge anyone who thinks otherwise because both Nylander and Matthews have legitimate cases as well

And Nylander doesn't play on a line with Matthews. That's a big factor as well when considering points produced.
