I just fing love it when he scores a goal on a wrister from near the blueline because of the number of times I have read on here that you can't score goals on wristers from near the blueline
I think that Mitch might prove everyone wrong and you right !

Clearly, skating away from the net and floating one from the blueline is the new black. Matthews should pay close attention.

NHL @nd Star of the Week and on a pretty good heater right now.

I dont think a single fan here wants Mitch to fail. I do think a lot of fans will be looking this year in the PO to see what he brings in all situations. If he falls flatand the Leafs fail to progress. Something needs done about hos and JTs cap

I never said it was solely on Marner but I do acknowledge that some do, which is unfair. As I stated times after times, Reilly is the only one that can escape criticisms from playoffs past.
When AM, MM and JT combined for 1 of the 10 goals scored in a series, thats horrible nomatter how many shots, or HD chances or whatever fancy stats you put out that supported they played well.
I think part of the reason why some feels MM is being attacked more is mainly bc there are just those who will defend MM to no ends. When people justly or unjustly pointed out something, it gets escalated pretty quickly.

For example, I find it hilarious that someone here will break down each MM points to show he doesn't deserve it, and at the same token someone else will point to how MM dominated in his draft +1 season at the OHL as prove that he is a clutch player.
I understand both sides but give it a rest bc we all know MM, he got great talents, one of the top players in the league. Like all greats, he will have bad games and great games, there will be points where it seems like he did very little-like the assist he got from McMann open net goal against the Blues or assist that deserves more than the goal-like the pass to Bert's first goal last game.
At the end of the day, he is a Leafs and if Leafs players do well, it usually means Leafs wins.

I think his game really matures and if he can continue to get better, he will play a big part of Leafs winning the Cup.
I wasn't necessarily writing or directing the post at you in particular, more at the last paragraph(statement) of the post I quoted.

Cheers

1st line was not even close tn. Too bad..Got a feeling Matthews is going from red hot to ice cold all of a sudden.
They had a few good shifts but weren’t good enough.

The Vegas game is a textbook example of how Mitch can get pushed out and neutralized by big teams that just take up all the good real estate. The team will just have to have guys who can keep competing and drag him back into the fight.

Both of the Matthews not showing up tonight didn’t help.

Matthews also gets pushed out of games like these. The risk of running that duo like Kariya and Selanne as your bread and butter is teams just focus on isolating the two from one another. And they don’t go kicking and screaming. So yeah the more other guys can get going it will be critical to overcome these types of situations.

I don’t see any reason for concern, they’ve been excellent

They had their moments, but the size of Vegas kind of took over for the most part. Matthews won a few board battles, but at times they both looked timid. These are the games they have to push through and get into the dirty areas. They were bound to have a down game after the run they have been on

Of course. This team has shown that they always pull it together and are ready to rumble when the playoffs start, so why worry?

The reason not to worry is that they were indeed bound to have a down game, and the first home game after a long successful trip is often a bad one.

The reason to worry is that this is how they lose in the playoffs - they just don't have what it takes to "push through". Even without their 2 best forwards, Vegas was too much for them to handle.

Big picture - last night was just one game out of an 82 game warmup so no need whatsoever to read much into it. The real season starts soon enough, then we'll see if these guys have figured it out yet or if it's same old, same old. I don't have much hope that because Marner is still "maturing" like some people say (just one example, it's not all on him before people start to get angry) there's much reason to hope things will be different but you never know. Maybe Reavo does something in the locker room that lights a fire under everyone, maybe Woll is a hero and that inspires everyone, maybe a maturing Marner does figure it out and plays like a star for 24 games instead of just 4, maybe Matthews scores at a goal a game pace, maybe Keefe turns into Knute Rockne and takes a big step towards becoming a legend as has been predicted by some (OK predicted by one), that's the beauty of the playoffs, it is a new season, a fresh start and a blank scorecard for everyone and we'll see what happens. As the saying goes, hope spring eternal.

Right. Exactly this.

Then we get into depth match, but mind you there was really obvious reffy nonsense last night.

not much beyond the nice SH chance and the sequence leading to the Matthews shot that hit Knies, also thought it was the correct call on his trip but maybe there is a different angle

The angle they kept showing was that he tapped his shinpad.

Stick never was between his legs or interfered with him.

It was a pretty poor call.
From where the ref was I could see why he called it. His stick was on him and it may have led directly to a scoring chance. With the benefit of replay, it was a weak call, but That’s why positioning is so important so you can avoid these types of plays

Bigger teams have a real influence on Mitchy. When they separate him from AM it really shows, and then the outside basketball offense begins.
Mitchy is a skilled excellent player. When his timidity shows up the Leafs suffer.
I believe Keefe has to do one of two things.
1. Force Mitchy up ice, breaking out behind the d to back them out and give him space. Gretzky did this with perfection. Reduced his defensive zone responsibilities. (Willie as well)
OR

2. Play Reaves on his wing. We have No once else to help our most gifted players.

This core cannot be allowed to fail again.
