I'd like to hear your argument as to why you think this team will in fact compete for a cup with our players and cap structure. Our core players are in their primes today. Both Matthews and Nylander are having career scoring years. Do you truly foresee this team in a conference final this year or do you see these players improving once their pay increases kick in? There is too much pressure on these 4 guys and I don't think they can do it alone. I don't think waiting until 2025-2026 for JT's deal to expire is a good strategy
Once Nylander was signed that's the strategy that was taken.
Nylander was obviously the player that should have been moved.

I don’t disagree with you, I thought Nylander was the right piece to move too, followed by tavares

That isn’t realistic now and while Marner may be my favorite player on the team he is still the only one they can walk away from

Mistakes have obviously been made

This team was expected to win before these big 4 got their big pay days. That’s why Tavares was brought in. The team failed hard, management failed hard and then continued to fail hard.

It doesn’t mean they have to continue to fail
By all accounts, Marner is rumored to be signed for big money this summer. The fail would be not signing him and waiting for a career year next year like Willy.

We won a round last year. We have vastly improved on the left wing. Bert and Domi are starting to kick in. Florida is in a bit of a tailspin. Boston has lost some key players. And it all comes down to goaltending anyway. It's hard to win the cup, 31 teams don't.

That's only one season. Short term thinking is not a good idea in this case.
Look, Covid really messed up our cap structure. It's not ideal. You don't get rid of Marner to fix it.

I don't think the Player or the Team will want it to drag on into the season.
Hopefully everything is wrapped up before camp starts, is should be a pretty simple negotiation.

A lot depends on his post season. If the playoffs are too much for him again this year then they’ll have some decisions.

You're assuming they feel it's been a problem with him in the past.

I’m sure the new GM has watched his performances, and now he gets a first hand look and an inside view.
Marner gets another chance and one would assume that if he fails in the biggest games for the same reasons as past years, then they’d have some decisions to make.

I'm sure they've watched but no one knows if they've come to the same conclusions as those here.
It's doubtful they have.

Wonder what "big" is though.....can't be more than Matthews can it? Somewhere between Matthews and Nylander?????

13 roster spots taken next year, not including Marner, with 19.2 M available.....so he signs for say 12M AAv....that is 14 roster spots, with 7M to fill out the remaining 7 spots....? keeping mind Robertson, Dewar and Liljegren are on expiring RFA deals this season...... and 5 D signed

Pridham going to have to do some crazy gymnastics!

Marner is signed for next year. New deal would be for the following season.

Like I said I assume they will continue to evaluate and haven’t made any decisions, yet.

If you think a decision that big is up to Tre…

No chance he can decide if Mitch stays or goes. That is up to Shanny and Mitch.

Over the last 3 years in the playoffs:

The player with the most points on the Leafs: Marner

League PPG ranking in the playoffs among all 103 forwards with 20+ games played:

12. Marner (1.040)

All these years also up against Vezina winning playoff goalies, 2 of them on crazy hot streaks.

The best 5v5 goal differential on the Leafs: Marner

Marners 5v5 goal differential relative the other players on his team and where he ranks among all other 55 forwards with 400+ minutes the last 3 seasons:

1. Marner (+23.46)
2. McDavid
3. MacKinnon

(Its not just him getting lucky with bounces either as he ranks 2nd for xGF% REL as well)

Statistically, he has been at least a top 10 defensive forward if not top 5.

In the regular season he has averaged as a 100 point player with 2x 1st team all stars and a Selke nom.

He's not going to make more than Matthews though.

12.5x8 is probably what is coming down the pipe. If not, there are 31 other teams willing tmake room for him but I don't think the Leafs are having the same conversations as around here concerning his family, his media interviews or outlier games.

What team is giving Marner $100m on a 7 year deal if the Leafs allow him to walk? The guy is on a 16.4 goal pace in 50 playoff games. Barely can score a PP goal in the playoffs. One lousy PPG in 50 payoff games while playing top PP minutes. If the Leafs do they are overpaying again like they did Willy. Nobody was paying Willy $92m on a 7 year deal but the Leafs had to mid season and could not dig in. #Insanity.
