What do you disagree with? Here is the quote:

"We’re looked upon as kind of gods here, to be honest. Something that you appreciate. The love you get here from this fan base... this attention is [unlike] any other."
Yes, he obviously didn't literally say that

I guess Cooper didn't like god on skates floating around doing his best to avoid physical contact and get back to the bench safely.

I'd like to think Marner learned something from this but I doubt it. Chances are sitting on the bench for a game won't change a damn thing for a player with a history of ignoring the coach. If anything it'll just reinforce his twisted self image of awesomeness.

When you think you're the shit it's easy to write everyone else off.

I don't know how any true fan of the Leafs could advocate for keeping this guy. Seems a lot of people on here have become fans of the player instead of the team. They prefer to cheer for the name on the back of the jersey rather than the crest on the front.

I hope they enjoy paying even more money next year for the same lacklustre product.

I'd rather throw my money in the toilet. At least the toilet won't insult me as I do it. Doesn't stink as bad either.

It's shocking someone could play so many years and still not do what is expected of him to win.

If I'm Treliving this description of Mitchs skillset by Cooper doesn't make me want to sign Mitch long term lol.

"He is not the fastest kid on the ice. He doesn’t have the hardest shot on the ice. He doesn’t do a whole bunch of things that a lot of guys on both teams do better than him. But it is really hard to sit here and say, ‘Was there a better player?’

Note Cooper shortly later demoted Marner to the 4th line and played him 2nd least among all forwards and least among forwards 5v5. Marner is the 4th highest paid player on the team over past 6 years and if he has it his way, wants to be the highest paid player by next year ;).

Not bad for a small, slow, weak shot player who doesn’t do a whole bunch of things that a lot of guys on both teams do better than him.

The problem with Marner, as it's always been, is his lack of scoring. He only shows up on the scoresheet if his linemates are scoring because he can't score himself. That in itself is fine, but he wants to be one of the highest paid players in the league and he needs players who can score for him.

Marner getting demoted to 4th line minutes while Matthews was leading all US forwards in ice time is exactly why Marner should never be making near the same as Matthews. Marner's production is too dependent on what's around him - fine if we're paying him like Max Domi - catastrophic if we're paying him like Matthews.

You have to be a kook to want to pay him anywhere near 13m. A lot of people would flat out say ask to waive or let walk. You aren't getting value back from this. He is overrated and exposed because the execs wouldn't trade him before the nmc kicked. Now he has a highlight of shame in this tournament. Very poor performance. 4th line talk about chopped down at the knees, what a slap.

You intentionally skipped a bit to further your agenda.Yes, Cooper said this :
When you are that size, you have to be unique at something,” Cooper said. “You have to be better than everyone else at something. If you really watch that game, the plays he made in tight, the plays he made in traffic… He is not the fastest kid on the ice. He doesn’t have the hardest shot on the ice. He doesn’t do a whole bunch of things that a lot of guys on both teams do better than him. But it is really hard to sit here and say, ‘Was there a better player?’

“He puts himself at that elite level with the way he thinks the game and processes the game at such a high level and at such a high rate of speed. That is why he is the player he is. I have watched him close up. I have coached against him in a playoff series. I have watched what he can do. There are not too many guys who can excel as a power play player, a penalty killer, a 5-on-5 guy, and at 3-on-3. Mitch can do it all.”

Also, Cooper changed the lines after the loss to the USA.

He answered his own question is there a better player... by putting him on L4 and the least minutes.

You guys really need to let it sink in. He isn't a playoff performer or 13m player.

Obviously, he is what he is as you are what you are, and I am what I am etc. Some fans gave a good idea, but sure, they don't have the full picture.
Everyone has enough picture to say 13m range is insane. 12.5m is insane. 11.5m is insane but getting reasonable and don't worry I know Nylander is not worth his 11.5m either. These are 10m players on the new projected 94m cap. JT 7m+ for 3 years is also insane.

Yeah, people might not like paying him an increase on a contract. The team doesn't have to sign him. He doesn't have to sign one either. Most people believe that he will re-sign though. It won't bother me either way . As I mentioned before, I am still going to support the Leafs and I hope they win a Cup with or without him.

He didnt get the least minutes.
Crazy people refuse to look at context of the entire situation to push their theory's, or even the facts.

1. He didn't get least amount of mins
2. If you look at TOI, even the "star" players of Canada are only playing 15 mins like MacK etc.

Anyways, I love Marner some games, and some games I hate him, this tournament has only exposed him to a bigger stage on his real issue, you can't expect if to be the guy that takes over a game or is able to break through. He does a lot of things super well that help you win games, but he's not "the guy" that's going to be taking over the game.

It's so easy to say "Don't resign him" and use his money else where in free agency. But there is massive risk when it comes to signing free agent players and giving them big money. It's so easy to overpay mediocre players and having that become a problem (Look at Domi BTW). \

Is it better to overpay Marner then to overpay elsewhere?

If we don't pay Marner, is there a chance we make better use of the cap space( look at Tanev BTW)?

Sooner ditch JT and Marner and give McDavid an offer he can't refuse

Guessing Cooper will ride his top two lines in the final. Top lines will play 20+ minutes. The bottom 6 will play 10 if they are lucky. Truth is, Marner is playing himself into the press box. He should be thankful it is only a 4 game series.

8 playoffs and now this tournament and some fans think he is going to morph into something that he is not and are willing to pay $13+m to find out. If he does not change his spots, you might as well put the final nail in the coffin. Your window to win is closed.

How are people even saying he has been OK? I mean you and a bunch of us were seeing him lost on the ice, bailing on plays, making bad passes etc. McDavid got frustrated and now a demotion and reduction in minutes yet he is still OK?

It's madness

Exactly
They keep going back and mentioning his strong defensive play, which is a cop out. The guy simply looks out of place

Depends how you look at it, are you ok with overpaying for mediocre in the long term for short term success? If Toronto can get a Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad for combined 14m, over Marner 14m, then it something to think about (don't think both will be that cheap). But it's not a easy choice to walk away from a top 10 winger, who does have his faults yes.

Tanev could fall off the cliff any moment but you know at least the 1st year & 2nd year will be good, much like Brodie, really it just depends on how the team see's itself, are they willing to give contracts out in FA that help the team in years 1,2,3 and at the backends are anchors.

My guess he does ride them as well. I don't think Marner has been awful this tournament as some are suggesting. Playing him with McDavid wasn't the smartest option IMO, I don't find anyone on team Canada that has a great tournament either. It's a short 4 game tournament with players you have zero chemistry with.

As Randy Carlye once said, Marner has been "just ok".

It’s funny to me, Nylander had three shots all tournament, Matthews 1 assist, those threads are dead and everyone is complaining about the guy who scored the goal to get us to the final. This place is lost, but that’s okay, we’ve found our peeps. Toxicity national unites!

Marner's a high ceiling, low floor player who can look like a magician one night and a finger painter the next. I'm not surprised but Cooper's big adjustment just tells you things are not going well with him.
I'm legit surprised we haven't seen the usual Marner's the best player on the ice comments from his inner circle.

Matthews and Nylander lead their teams forward group in ice time. Marner’s ice time has been dropping the more he plays.

This is the problem looking at only points, you assume their play is based on points. If so Marner wouldn’t be getting less and less while Nylander and Matthews get more.

WN and AM are not up for contract. AM is injured. WN may have the flu but has 2pts and didn't get demoted. He had shown some good and some bad.

MM was demoted for poor play and is apparently asking to be either the highest paid player or close to 13m+

I think it's pretty obvious why it is the way it is.
