That statement is a little bit of an oxymoron isnt it?

"Marner is not the problem...the cap is poorly distributed."

And how would you suggest to build this team for the playoffs? All we heard was how this team lacks grit, it lacks leadership, the defence is terrible etc. Dubas goes and addresses these concerns and the results are still the same, with the same over paid players UNDER producing compared to their peers. But yes, please tell me how Marner is not part of the problem for this playoff loss.

Marner's cap isn't the problem. In fact if it weren't for Covid and the cap was getting towards $100M we would be fine. The problem now is Tavares is getting old and NO ONE can afford $11M on that kind of luxury with a flat cap. You might say why not Marner over Tavares and that's because Marner is young and getting better and Tavares isn't. It was a good plan but Covid and the flat cap wasn't part of it.

Jones? Eichel?

My middle daughter really wanted a Leafs jersey for the playoffs. My oldest has a Tavares jersey, my youngest has one without a name on it. So I got my middle daughter a Marner jersey.

She tries it on and said “I hate this!” And she refused to wear it the entire playoffs.

You don't know what you're talking about.
Probably not, I’m just a fan on a fan site sharing my opinion and I don’t expect it to be taken as gospel. I’m not unwavering opinion wise. I’m just looking for a discussion.

I’m interested in your thoughts as to which piece bothered you the most though.

Remember when Marner was willing to block shots with his face. What happened?

Big payday.

The sad reality is that despite all the crocodile tears from Matthews and Marner they will head out to their luxury cottages, grab some champagne on their houseboats while booking tee times at their favorite private country clubs.

When faced with the choices of living a relaxed life of luxury and leisure or working your ass off for 4 rounds of the playoffs it's kind of obvious which path they've chosen.

Matthews and Marner just aren't prepared to put in the work to win a championship. It's that simple. They need to go.

There's tons of flexibility with $22M in cap space.

Of course. But I don't think that's enough to drop his value just yet, he's still an insanely talented player who has had stellar production, and he's only 24. Another team devoid of talent up front will take a chance on him.

For this very reason I’m saying the leafs should keep him. The strength of this team is the offence. You take Marner away, you’ll have to add a lot of talent to offset that. See the Tavares injury and the impact to the team.

Right now his value is low due to his garbage playoff performance. Also, teams are going to be looking at the expansion draft protection slots they need and free agency a short while away. Going to be hard to get top value for him right now.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him start the season with us, and the team takes a gamble that he dominates the first 10-15 games as a regular season performer (and get his playoff performance out of people's minds), and then get traded to a team that's underperforming to start the season. I think that's probably the best way to get full value.

Only way I am trading 34 is if I can get 97 or 29. McGuire said it this morning, show 34 some playoff video of Bergeron, Kopitar, Toews from their SC years. I think you have to work with him to get him over the hump. Marner can GTFO along with his Daddy and Ferris.

One person on Twitter said he's not mentally strong enough to play in his hometown. And he's not physically strong enough for playoff hockey. Best to part ways

I just came across that and my jaw dropped. Tulloch, the author isn't some rumor monger either, he's written for legit media publications too.

If Marner is back next season (and there s a high probability of that) things will need to change
Not sure why you’re surprised though. Keefe is obviously a beta male. Exactly the type of personality who’d let a few entitled brats compromise his authority as coach.

Having seen so many Leafs get traded and thrive on another team I would like to first purge the entire coaching staff and see what happens. Bring in a Gallant or the likes there of and then evaluate who stays and goes. Over two years Marner did nothing in the playoffs and Keefe did nothing as well. Sometimes a player needs a Torts to say yeah that's cute but now go hit someone, it's the playoffs. And if he doesn't he sits even in the playoffs.

Some trades just need to happen. Marner will be booed every time he touches the puck when fans are allowed back.

Kessel had to be traded. He quit on the team and was toxic. Marner is now in the same boat.

The best value from Marner will be cap space.

Tavares has a full NMC and is the captain of this team. He is going no where. It's crazy that you don't think Mitch Marner greeding this team for everything he can get is not part of the problem at all. Live in reality for a bit.

A deal around Tkachuk for Marner isn’t terrible. We do loose the better player but we get the type of player this team desperately needs. Not to mention, Matthews does loose a good friend in Marner but gains someone he grew up knowing and playing hockey with. I’d definitely want a draft pick coming with Tkachuk.

Tkachuk - Matthews - Robertson
Hyman - Tavares - Nylander

I can dig that top six.

Big brain move is convince them no number is what real fans do and then you won’t need to buy new jersey’s when they get a new favourite player

Marner's cap hit is precisely the problem!! It's by far the biggest problem.

Its sad to say.. I wouldn't even trade him.... I would expose him in the draft and hope Seattle takes him... its at that point with Marner. If he took fair value and took it for 8 years, you could cut the guy some slack but the fact that he put his heart and soul into his contract negotiations and nothing into the game, it's sad.
