Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

You are missing some key points: We can acquire assets back for Nylander and we cannot acquire any assets back for Marner

By that logic you could just sign Marner and say we lied. You need to go now. May as well, it's essentially what you would be doing to Matthews or Nylander

Annnddd why is Willy waiving his NMC again??

He is just sick of riding the TTC and chatting with people in the streets. Just so sick of it here that he said it's the only place to win. It's almost as though psychologically he didn't really like being moved around with his dad from team to team and landed in a passionate hockey town and actually wants to win here.

Oh wait I made the wrong argument. Haha I must be so stupid.

Good to see you around again HamiltonNHL, haven't seen you around for awhile.

Yeah missed his daily Marner rep. Saved the Marner PR crew some work. LOL

Trading Nylander will get you back assets worth roughly 12M.

Letting Marner walk will save you 13-14M, which you can then use to get assets worth roughly 13-14M.

Keeping Nylander and letting Marner walk means you get to keep the better player and get rid of the problem. Plus you don't have to try to convince Nylander to waive his NMC or try to convince Marner to stay.

Easier, smarter, and better financially.

If Marner was smart which I'm sure he's not he'd take like 17 million dollars a year to play in Anaheim where no one will know who is , he can put up 100 points every year not even have to worry about making the playoffs OR dealing with us chuckleheads chirping him.

Yeah the obvious preference is to always keep the better player but he doesn’t seem interested in signing and they we’re unsuccessful when shopping Nylander, so here we are.

Still 3 weeks, a lot can happen in that time.

Well, I would say Mitch Marner is a historical outlier for having to leave his hometown over historical resentments stemming from a GM who didn’t give him Schedule B bonuses and mistreatment from a coach 8-10 years ago, whose hurt feelings couldn’t be ameliorated by a 6 year overpay.

The ignominy of coming up so feebly in big games and yet having some kind of resentment towards the situation that you have to blame it all on some mistreatment and outside noise. It’s sad and funny at the same time. Goodbye and good luck Mitch.
Those aren't the only bad things that have happened to him in Toronto. He got held at gunpoint, had his home vandalized three different times, doxxed, harassed on the street, and people have threatened to kill his family. Sure, the team didn't do those things, but they happened here. I wonder if Willie would ride the TTC if people f***ed with him like they do Mitch.

We're going to miss Marner's drive.. He leads this team much more than Captain Underpants.. Who should have never been given the "C"

He may find out, he won’t be able to hide as the 3rd wheel any longer.

"Marner's drive"?

I don't think Matthews was a good choice for captain, but I think Marner would be even worse.

And the discussion was not about either Matthews or being captain.

He also gets 100 points in the season and disappears in the playoffs and runs from contact... Facts... I watch every game... Doesn't look like you do

To be fair.. Mitchy never has Matty ripping any heads off which is what a smaller play maker needs. The core 4 have never taken bodies out.. Even the easy hits will zap energy from lines when players need to skate back into the plays.

I guess the good thing is that Willy hasn't given them any reason to dislike him.

And to be perfectly clear, I am not in any way justifying or excusing the actions of those idiots.

Sure, “they treat us like Gods” Marner was so mistreated in Toronto. The only boy who was ever handled meanly by a coach and the only boy who didn’t get what he wanted on a rookie contract.
Being "looked upon as... kind of gods" has both advantages and disadvantages, and It's amazing that that quote still gets misunderstood. We both know that he's endured a heck of a lot more than just the coaching abuse and the withholding of earned bonuses (though the latter was actually pretty unprecedented even besides the disrespect of the GM immediately abandoning it for the next guy), and while any one thing may not have driven him away, everything together might.

You have quite the imagination with your little stories, but no, Marner wouldn't be the first player to leave a place where he was undervalued and mistreated, though it is historically pretty rare for a GM to fumble things this badly with one of their most important players. Also pretty rare for fans to be this toxic towards one of their best players. Marner is quite the historical outlier in one way at least - the amount of irrational hate he gets. Hopefully they still find a way to come to a deal.
Reportedly rejected 13.5, counteroffered 15.5, then refused to negotiate further. How exactly should the Leafs have handled that differently?
