Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

If money isn’t his greatest motivation? What is?

He refused a trade before his wife was pregnant. So if he wanted to go somewhere else. He has a NMC. Why not say. This is where I want to go and trade me there now or keep me?

He fought to stay and wants to leave money on the table to go?
I don’t think he knew what he wanted, maybe he still doesn’t, the clocks ticking on a decision though.
I have no doubt he ever thought it would come to this here.

Coaching abuse eh?
What a bitch.
I was firmly in Marner's corner when that whole thing got reported. I was pretty anti-Babcock through and through.

Well years later I'll have to admit wrong on this one. Between Lou witholding his bonuses and Babcock doing what he did those old timers saw straight from day 1 that this kid is a majorly entitled little shit who needs a different perspective on things. Then came Kyle Dubas who was the absolute antithesis of those guys and we all know how that went.

I think it was some really good NHL coach (who won a good deal) who talked about how he would verbally berate his best players about how bad they were doing during film, years later when one of the worse players asked him why he did that and why they always took it, he said something along the lines "if the worse players see how hard I am on them and that they can take it, they know what is expect of them and the lead they have to follow."

In Toronto it seems the opposite approach was taken, i.e remember the time Keefe apologized for calling them out? Now Berube is joking how Nylander doesn't listen to him and the result? Matthews/Marner after failing for a decade are calling out the bottom guys lmfao. Literally the inverse of the strategy and it truly makes sense as to why the results were as poor as they were.

The funny thing is that if they just had been slightly better people:
Added a bit more to their game, Matthews with speed, Marner with a shot, Nylander with two way play
If they had just taken 1-2 mill less, they could've had more drivers and fewer passengers
If they were just a bit more motivated maybe they could've gotten more out of their teammates following their lead

In all the series they lost it was always extremely close, even when they got pumped by the Panthers 2 years ago they lost 3 games by 1 goal and another by 2 goals, they really have nobody to blame but themselves. They f***ed up basically all the things they could f*** up.

8I don’t think he knew what he wanted, maybe he still doesn’t, the clocks ticking on a decision though.

What do you mean?
You think a player who
1.) had his agent/family media members negotiate publicly and trash his teammates and team didn’t think that would go poorly?

Ok sure. He was young. But he has had 6 years to plan his next move and he still screwed up the fan relationship.
He has learned nothing

2.) the season ended exactly how every other season ended in the past 8 years. He and his team went behind. Tied it up. Forced a finalist to game 7 and he couldn’t score. Fans got mad. He knew what the reaction would be.

Losing in 7 to one of Tampa/boston/florida wasn’t realistic possibility?

3.) he chose not to sign. He chose not to be traded. He had all last summer to think about it.

How can a 28 year old man who has played in every arena and every market and knows players all over the league have no idea what he wants?

How can all these other players know. What can he possibly learn now that he couldn’t have last summer?

The Marner 'stoll considering Toronto's lines are ramping up in the media. CJ today was saying he's still considering wanting to stay

Whether its legitimate or just posturing, who knows.
He never wanted to leave... it's always just been trying to drive his price up (or getting the short term deal) and applying more and more pressure while he had all the leverage and he knew Leafs would lose him for nothing. But he overplayed his cards and now hes doing damage control.

He is becoming the villain now and being pushed out, instead of him deciding to go.

Playing the victim to Torontos intense pressure looks terrible, Patches, Domi, Vaive, Roberts...all came out and said the pressure is a privilege.

Refusing the Rantanen trade looks bad, especially when he knew he wanted to leave (apparently).

Refusing to negotiate in season (holding the team over a barrel.

He is being roasted on most networks.

His image is taking a beating. Hopefully Tree will reveal more after he is gone

Too bad Mitch... should have taken the 13.5 million and ran while dummy Shanahan was still here. Enjoy playing in a city where you aren't noticed, that dont care about winning and you no longer are "treated like a god."

GTFO

The marner saga is playing out just like I mentioned it would months ago. It’s just common sense.

Fans thought “forcing” Marner to waive was an option when it never was and GMs have too much respect for players to pull a childish stunt.

Marners camp stayed true to their word. Tre knows the deal. They will test the market in value and then ask the leafs to come close.

It’s what agents do. Marner said he wants to stay but also knows there is only so many pieces of the pie here and 88 and 34 got the biggest piece. Reilly is the player the leafs should try to dump as he is our worst “value player”. Well one of the worst as Kampf and Domi contracts are bad too.

Odds are Marner is gone and has every right to do so. The only glimmer of hope to get any asset back from Marner is a sign and trade but the don’t expect much of a return for that extra yr on contract

Mitch Marner is an excellent player. I hope he signs a team friendly and sticks around. My opinion of him would go up a million percent if he signed a team first contract like Crosby did around the same age.

Mitch ain’t perfect but 100 points and Berube leaned on him all season with the most minutes. This is a highly respected and extremely talented player.

Now do playoffs....

40 year old Corey Perry has more goals these playoffs than Marner does for his entire 6 year contract, let that sink in.
Sam Bennett making $4.425 mil has as many goals 13 in this current season alone than Marner in 3 years X ELC + 6 years @ $10.9 mil. So over the course of 9 playoff season Magic Mitch has 13 measly goals total,

That doesn't even put Marner in the top 100 playoff goals scorers during those past 9 years combined.

Let that sink in,

Thankfully he had to perform in the playoffs to keep his job with the Leafs. Can you imagine the discussion if he had an 8 year $13.5 extension.

Marner should be a second pairing defenseman. He's not a top pairing dman but he's a valuable piece in a properly structured defense.

Said it for months but the idiots running the candy store ignored all logic and offered him $108m. Absolutely f***ing clueless and they learned nothing from the Nylander deal. They continue to bet on the same 3 losers but Marner won't allow it. Thank the Gods.
