Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

That's not how it works, GM's offer horrible contracts all the time. Just because a player is paid X amount, does not mean that, that's what his value is.

For example the Brad Richards UFA "sweepstakes" he wasn't worth anything near that amount. Or David Clarkson for example. But "The GMs set his value"
It's more accurate to say GMs set the value based on the leverage of the player not just the skill level. In a weak class Marner is gonna get paid for sure.

It's really the only way to determine what a player is worth is by his perceived value around the league. Players value can certainly go down after signing.
It's certainly more accurate than some biased people on the Internet, who are detached from the situation, thinks it should be.

So. In my perfect world they would sign Mitch and move Mathews. Try and retool with Austin. Sign Bennet and make a trade for maybe Krouse or Kadri or both. Too much drama with Mathews and Marriner but I would keep Mitch. Find some dogs for this team. With Bennet and a few others along with Marriner and Nylander I think they can get to the next level. If anything is evident here the Atlantic is what they need to get out of. I’m not a Mathews fan, we need some strong minded people on this team.

The CBA allows for teams to sign players a year in advance of their expiring contracts but their current contract is still in play for the current year.

Draisailt is in year #8 of his current year making $8.5 mil. Its that current amount that is currently being applied to 2024-25 Salary Cap ceiling of $88 mil.

His new $14 mil per contract doesn't begin until 2025-26 season at which point it will apply against $92.4 mil cap ceiliing = ~ 15%..

There is no point at which his current deal will apply against a former cap other then as a reference point at time of signing. Again his $14 mil new contract will never be a factor in this year's Oilers team playing in the final because he is only making $8.5 mil.

If Draisaitl signs a year early and Rantanen at the Trade deadline and Marner this summer all 3 of their NEW salaries will apply a CH% agaisnt the 2025-26 Cap, because they're all currently playing out their last year of their current contacts agaisnt the 2024-25 Cap.

You seem to believe Draisaitl $14 mil salary for next year seems to appling to this year 2024-25 $88 mil cap ceiling which is FALSE its his current $8.5 mil that is. No difference had Marner re-signed early Leafs would still be only applying his $10.9 mil not his new contract to this year.

Both Draisaitl and Marner (and Rantanen) next contract will allow apply to the $92.4 mil for 2025-26 as will thier actual CH%.
I don't believe the increase in cap was announced when Draisaitl signed. If he was signing July 1 as a UFA would he get 14?

A UFA contract is essentially going to be an eBay buy now button to end an auction.

Talk about having your hands tied from above and below and them blamed that YOU didn't trade Marner in the short 5 week window between your hire and Marner NMC kicking in.

Marner needs to have moved on by July 15, 2024 max.
Otherwise he should be deemed in contempt of being traded and needs to be outted as non-compliant with the team's new direction.

He will test free agency.

Glass is fragile. No wonder they are injury prone.
:sarcasm:

Tre has one job: with 2 levels:

God Tier: trade Marner and get something back.

GM of the year: Trade Marner.

Fired: Sign Marner.

Marner is walking.

The Leafs can't sign him.

He's never going to materialize as a playoff threat. So if winning the cup is a goal, then Marner has to go.

Trade Marner for Ekblad

I was keen on Trading Marner, in case you forgot.

Ok, then I play the Crosby card.
Crosby is a historical outlier that had a huge obsession with the number 87. Even then, it represented the highest value post-ELC contract ever, and is a sizeable amount for a player in their late 30s. The second contract was a couple percent below where you'd expect, and good for Crosby for taking one for the team, but we should also remember that it was a currently-illegal career contract for a player that was dealing with a career threatening injury, so not exactly a good example of what to expect.

That is hilarious. Hang his #16 jersey up?

The guy has done nothing but hamstring the organization to getting to the promise land. Had this guy been the passionate hometown player and taken them to the next level because of his willingness to take less to be home!!!! Then yes I would hang that jersey from the rafters.

But his greediness and selfish "me" persona that he has. No thanks. He and his day can leave town. Not wanted in Toronto.

No one is arguing Marner isn't a really good player. He has demonstrated an inability to get it done when it matters and wants to be paid an absolute premium.

Imo there is no contending team that will sign him for more than Rantanen. Even at $12 million they run the risk of jamming up their cap like in Toronto.
Dont be too sure

Something that is really funny..... when the Leafs became prominent in this city as a contender once again. I am one for jersey's. I bought 2-3 Matthews jerseys, a Tavares jersey when he signed here, a Nylander jersey once he signed his last contract....but Marner??? Not one jersey of his..... something always told me he was larger then the crest on his chest. Never liked the guy...maybe its my bias watching him play on my nephews team. Maybe it was me not liking his father. But I always thought he would not be a Leaf long. He did it as a youth and he would continue as a pro....wore out his welcome everywhere he played.

Talk about not making any sense

True stat:

Mitch is (for now) 5th all-time in Leafs playoff points.

Considering how few games he played and how underwhelming his performance has been in the post-season, it is one of the most damning indictments of this franchise's absolutely atrocious playoff history post-1967.

(AM & Willie will likely both catch him if the Leafs get out of the 1st round next year, possibly even if they don't make it that far.)

It's the opposite.
He's never going to be a playoff performer.
EVER.

He can't zone entry, carry the puck, or score in the playoffs.
Perpetually injured.
So what I meant about retool with Austin was to find a trading partner to take him off our hands. I think with Mathews we would get several good pieces back for him. Winn did very well trading Dubois, Leafs should do very well trading Austin. It’s time to change the makeup of this team
