Marner with an "A" is another stain on this organization's ability to assess character.

As associate captain you'd think he'd have a more TEAM mindset. Not "I'm perfect and everyone else are the ones making mistakes". Marner has single handedly lost games but never a peep about how he needs to play better.

He's an associate captain but doesn't accept responsibility for the team's losses like a real leader would.

As a leader you shouldn't be deflecting blame on others while absolving yourself. Scapegoating is a sign of poor leadership. If you have a letter on your jersey an attitude like that is inexcusable.

His lack of being an example my kids should follow is pathetic.

He just comes across as a stereotypical rich kid. All he sees in the mirror is how good he looks. Comoletely incapable of accepting any responsibilty.

Counting his stacks wondering how to get out of Fort Knox with his reputation intact.
He's none alone. The leaders of this team do not have the character of a SC winner. They are selfish, me first players which makes them the most unlikable Leafs core for me. Very sad after seeing this team take the heavily favoured Caps to 6 games.

So hard to believe that at one point I actually thought this team would win a cup.

Yes, Berube was able to barely fluke out a win 6 years ago with a very different team, in the year that he had the least influence on them and faced opponents decimated to injury and poor goaltending. But I'm not sure what you think that has to do with my post.

For the record, even including that year, he has a losing record in the playoffs. Since that year, he's 8-16. That's one of the worst in the league. Worse than Keefe over that time.

So according to your own criteria, you should hate him.

I truly cringed when they named him an alternate "A" along with Matthews.

I mean, what bigger sign is it that a team is infant-level coddling its players than the inability to just give one of the "A"'s to Auston or Mitch and not both (I'm pretty sure Reilly was the other Assistant when Tavares was named as Captain.) And the idea one would wear it on the road and the other at home ... my God man, just embarrassing on so many levels.

It reeked of Shanny/Dubas not wanting to hurt poor, little Mitchy's feelings if he didn't get to be assistant along with his buddy. I'm just not sure if the decision was born out of spinelessness on behalf of the GM and President (and MLSE in general) or they were just being consistent with MLSE's corporate policy of treating their stars like royalty (aka spoiled brats)?

Many teams have multiple alternates. Leafs did 3+ alternates as far back as 1986. They had as many as 6 early in the cap era. Even during the Matthews era, Lou had them at 4, and Dubas actually cut them down. Marner earned his letter. What a silly thing to be upset about.

Totally agree. I have not seen a bigger leader in that dressing room for years than Mitch Marner. He smiles and hugs people, while singing, and that’s all you need, really, to perform

The single most important thing you look for in a leader, is that his teammates like him and from what some posters here have said, he is very well liked. It must be true because it's been posted literally hundreds of times. I hear he organizes team dinners and stuff like that and I don't even want to think about how rudderless this group would be without him. Mitchy Marner is the cement that binds this unit.

You can't put a price on that!

By all accounts Marner appears to be a strong contributor in the room and supports leadership in his own way, but at the same time probably didn't need the half A all this time.

Not sure if you’re serious or not, but he’s the next Wendel Clark IMO

I don't know.

But they had the chance to rectify that mistake this year when they gave the C to Matthews and gave Tavares an A. They could have just stripped Marner of his half A but instead decided to split Rielly's A in two. So they stripped Rielly of half his A basically.

They took it away from the wrong guy.
