It’s a dump in, you have Tavares and Lub on the right side of the ice. Lubushkin is already pinching up. Tavares is attacking the puck carrier. Ideally Marner cuts off Pasta but as we established Marner was not paying attention.

Rielly should be closer to the net or at least closer to the left corner for puck retrieval, especially if Boosh is pinching up. Nylander is high in the middle. Do we need 4 guys high on a dump? Who is going to retrieve the puck lol? This is simple, if one dman is pinching, the other stays low. I’m sure they all assumed the puck was going to be rung around and not dumped in cross ice, but that’s why you have one guy stay back just incase. It might be more indicative of Keefe’s netural zone defensive scheme. But Rielly is completely out of position there
Personally Id like to have Mo up higher so he can pace better and gain speed. I think deeper leads to he same flat footed response, so he's at the mercy of his reach

Boosh, JT, Willy all seem to have their responsibilities covered. Mo flat footed and Marner allowing the speed to be gained are the issues

Since when is a dump in blamed on the winger??

If Marner interfered Pasta it's 2 mins and everyone is up in arms about him taking a penalty. Wingers don't run interference on dump ins anymore, this isn't the 90's.

Regardless, that goal is on Samsonov and Rielly.

This is how I see it as well, if he impedes that’s a clear as day interference or trip called against the leafs.

What I am saying is that there is no point kept discussing that play. It really doesn’t matter if it is MM, or Reilly or Sammy or Willie or Keefe or Dubas or Tre or Shanny.

That play wasn’t the play that screwed the Leafs the Cup.

I just don’t see why someone would bring it up beside trolling MM and his fans and people responding are just falling for it.

I apologize, i misunderstood what you were saying at first

IMO on the best of his days Mitch would have followed him and shrunken the ice surface, without interference. But most players probably would not in the same situation. We hold him to the highest of standards, as we should.

It was a great play by Lindholm. Not so great by Rielly and Samsonov.

Discussing the Pasta goal without talking about the F1's (Tavares) lackadaisical attempt to challenge the pass is an oversight. The whole unit broke down but it started from there.

Blaming someone for allowing a neutral zone dump in from the redline?

That’s your idea of a bacc checc?

he back check on that play... His goal was to cover passing lane and thats exactly what he did perfectly

Rielly was the guy stay behind, his goal was to be first on dump and get caught out of position.

Its hockey 101 and If anyone blaming marner on that play, he certainly NEVER PLAY hockey and certainly dont understand anything about team system

holy crap we are still talking about game 7 last year. It's been half a year and it's still talked about.

To throw my two cents in, was it partly marner's fault? Yes, but I put more blame on Rielly, Samsonov and the team (mostly core 4) for only scoring 1 goal in the prior 60 minutes.

I only even blame marner because I expect more defensively from him than anyone, I would want him to make that read and hustle to catch up to it, but it's not really fair as the play happened in a few seconds, I just expect a lot from him on the defensive end of the ice.

I'll stick by my statement that samsonov needed to throw a poke check out, whether he gets pastrnak or the puck doesn't matter it stops the play. The puck pretty much went through the blue paint and he did nothing about it.

Rielly and Nylander don't help by kinda sorta just chilling around on the ice like it's a frat party, but I really think samsonov played that about as passively as possible

Not sure there's anywhere to go when we're classifying a dump in as a breakdown
To me, there was zero urgency to challenge the puck carrier. I would prefer the F1 to be harder on the puck. Every Leaf player was literally sitting back waiting for the Bruins to attack and not a single one of them took a stride until the puck was in the back of the net. Can't make things easy on your opponents in the playoffs. Even the dump ins.

It was early in OT of game #7 with a chance to sleigh the dragon. Zero urgency from 3 of the 4 core players they are betting everything on. Speaks volumes to me.

I clearly stated that it started with the F1 (should have been harder on the puck) and was a break down of the whole unit but go on.

JT put pressure
Marner covering his passing lane
Nylander was covering his passing lane
Boosh was cobering his passing lane

That's exactly what you want

The proble is the Guy behind who should covering dump ( who was the only option left didn't covering the dump and get caught too high.

This goal is not about anyone of marner, Nylander, JT or boosh who did exactly what expected... it all about Rielly who didn't. Its how 1 player can destroy a perfect team defensive coverage. Rielly had just to stay low and Boston would still had no option except dump it and he would be 1st on the puck but he was completly sleeping on the play, that's it

This is what got me. I get you don't want to make a mistake but you have to move. Just because the camera picks up the number of one of the involved players, doesn't mean it should all be put on him. There were lots of factors that went into that goal. Not establishing who was F1 quick enough. When it was established, zero urgency from Tavares to challenge the puck carrier. Zero movement from the rest of our roster with zero communication. Like a bunch of unplugged controllers.

Look at that gap between the puck carrier and the Leaf on that.

The gap is not pretty high, boston player had like 1/2 second to make a play and everything you see in this picture is exactly what coach teached and expected

F1 is supposed to be like a tip of an arrow when the opposition has the puck. Leafs played 1-2-2 neutral zone. So when the F1 pressures properly, he can direct where the play is going. That didn't happen and Pasta was able to blow by D2 with a ton of speed instead of having to slow up because the puck carrier wasn't impeded at all. That screenshot does not make it appear that Tavares was acting like the tip of spear but what do I know?

If Rielly is not that high nothing of it are possible whatever if pasta skating woth speed or not... Rielly get caught sleeping and out of position on a pure dump, nothing else to add

I know it’s for a good cause, but on camera it legitimately looks like he smeared some poo above his upper lip.

He keeps playing like he has been recently all year, it's going to be quite hilarious watching this place burn down when he gets his contract. Such a disconnect from reality.

The question is the playoffs. The regular season has never been a problem, we have seen this before. I hope he plays like this in the playoffs too, I really do.

Small sample size-and obviously a hot streak exaggerates-but Muffin Marner is on a 64 goal pace without Matthews. Makes you wonder if he’s a 40 goal man under the right circumstances. It does pierce this lame narrative that he can’t score, it reaffirms the idea that he defers, rather than an inability to score.
