Obviously they’re worse but it seems like it was let him walk or get something for him. Wonder how Avalanche fans are viewing Rantanen now?

Avs is not done. As we just know they are going after another C, could be Miller or Sid or even both with the extra picks plus cap space.
Canes definitely won the trade at this moment.

Canes have been playoff losers like but not as bad as the Leafs but have balls to make such a bold move. Hate to give up Necas for a rental.

Diff between Canes and us is that on paper, we got more game breaking talents like AM, MM and Willie, while the Canes are made of whole bunch of really really good players.

In a way, Canes is like the Raptors before the Kawhi trade. Now they have Rantanen who is a top 10 player in the league and hope he is someone who can bring them over the hump.

Rantanen was traded! What you are telling me not every GM is stupid enough to give their RFAs full NMC in their UFA year?

Nothing would say "we don't care about winning a cup" more than bringing Marner back.

Sakic is a savvy GM. He was able to make the Ranatanen trade because he didn't handcuff himself with a NMC. Over a million bucks a year while maintaining the flexibility to recover assets.

That's difference between a good GM and Dubas.

The Leafs have painted themselves into a corner. Losing Marner for no return should be a fireable offense for Shanahan. The opportunity was there to make a major move and he did not.

The ground is quickly shrinking beneath his feet as a result.

Now he's backed himself into a damned if you do damned if you don't situation. Re-signing Marner pretty much guarantees this team will remain mediocre. Letting him walk would be the worst asset management since I spent my allowance on comic books as a kid.

At least Batman was worth hero worshipping because he actually won.

Shanny will overpay. Sakic moved Ranta. One has a cup, the other has one win in 9.

There is no universe in which Carolina is winning the Cup with that goaltending tandem. I'm not sure they could even beat Jersey or the Rangers in the first round.

Defensemen are on a different payscale than forwards, and using players that signed under a lower cap and then not adjusting is pretty misleading. You weren't looking at how the cap hits relate to other teams. You changed the cap hits. You then compared those new cap hits to a select few individuals that signed under different caps and don't represent the average impact of that space (even for RFAs).

We didn't have the circumstances to get the best surplus value contracts in the league with them breaking out and giving us some of the best surplus value in the cap era through their ELCs, and then the cap stagnating due to a global pandemic, but that doesn't make the contracts bad. We still signed them to reasonable contracts and got a bunch of surplus value.
 
Still laughing my ass off that a properly run organization that's had legitimate success broke the ever-pervading rule of "never trading elite talent".

So we're over here trying to justify that Marner may get more than Matthews cause "salary cap rising bro" and Colorado just goes ahead and punts an even better player out the door cause he's demanding more than their #1C superstar. Rantanen - the winger, they weren't having it for 1 f***ing second letting him compare himself to a #1C.

Mind you most of these saps on the Marner PR crew don't have the first clue about team culture and how important it is anyway.
