Nylander getting trolled with his usage is directly affecting Marner now.

With the current setup, teams can throw everything at Marner so that he's unable to setup Matthews. And that's exactly what's happening. The guy has no space. You don't need any big strategy to defend the other 3 lines . Foligno, Kerfoot, Mik etc..these guys aren't going to score consistently. Don't be surprised if Nylander barely has any 5 on 5 assists this playoffs.

If they want to create space for Marner , give Nylander some damn respect and let him play with one of Hyman / matthews / marner.

While I agree with most of the "Marner has to be better" mantra, he has rarely turned the puck over and is very good defensively. So I think what we are complaining about is his ability to be an impact player on offence... He is one of those guys who will always get his points, so that to me is not a driving factor on if he played well or not.

The two components above, plus his ability to have and distribute the puck and make those around him better is the package we expect. Right now he is not making anyone around him better 5-on-5... But he is far from a liability.

Still wasn't good. But let's hope the production helps his confidence heading into next game because lord knows the 11M he's getting paid isn't moving the needle that much in the post season.
Yeah you can have a bad game and still get points. Hope he steps up.

I can see where you're coming from but Marner had that one monster postseason that stands as the best by a Leaf in the last 2 decades

Which post season is this? Columbus series? He had points but it wasn’t even playoffs and he didn’t truly dominate the games. He just picked up points.

He should be three times better then Nylander in the playoff after a season like thats. Not there yet.

It was one of the Boston ones - he played (and won) games with Plekanec as his center against the Bergeron line. That series was his coming out party

terrible mindset on here, Marner was hitting, taking pucks away, causing disruption, plus set up a goal and didn't cost us anything. What planet do you Marner haters live on?
These are great things to have in the playoffs, but there are some teams who get that from literally every single player in their lineup. Marner is being payed top 5 money, so the expectations on him have to be a lot higher. He should be tilting the ice whenever he's on and that simply hasn't happened so far in this series. Yes he had two assists, but they were not great assists - he hasn't created scoring chances like we are used to seeing from him

Agree 100% with these guys. Also playoffs not a spring like 100m or 200m, but its not a marathon either, like 1km race where run at a swift pace and burn it at the end; Leafs are playing the Canadiens for frig sakes, its better he playing a somewhat measured game.

Did you say Marner was hitting?? Not sure what game you were tuned into, but I didn’t see one hit.
I did see some horrible forechecks where was the first guy in the zone was skated away from the corner and giving up the puck to avoid contact.
He did that in several occasions.
Gave up an easy scoring opportunity to make the cute play.
He was not good tonight by any stretch.

I guess you watched a different game last night, because me(and tons of others in this thread, if you have a quick read.....) saw something very different last night. Marner actually played a very good game. Matthews was our best player last night, IMO. But Marner was far from a liability out there. He did lots of little things RIGHT.

He had great game i really don't know what people expect from him a highlight reel play every game?

He made a smart play to start the Matthews goal in the neutral zone. Assist. He made two nice passes prior to Sandin goal and it was his quick on the tape pass that allowed him to lean into that goal. Assist. He wasn’t on the ice for a goal, nor did they come close for that matter, despite all the ice time. He was good on the PK, stole some pucks, didn’t shy away from contact, defensively was always aware and effective.

He over thought that glorious chance, fair. He needs to tailor a bit to address the lack of space and time, fair. Also true last night, Hyman was really off for him and it sort of made the normal flow on that line disjointed.

He was in on two key goals last night. The save Price made Game 1 was called “save of the year” on 590, by a guy who played. He’s missed some chances and he isn’t a tree trunk out there, but he’s far from a liability and he’s part of the reason we won last night.

The people hating on this guy, who’s had one of the best early careers to date of any Leaf in a long history is the most “says more about you” things I’ve seen. Yes, we need more, the team hasn’t succeeded, but that’s a collective failing, not on the shoulders of one young star.

I’ll say what I’ve said prior, bet against Marner, with his drive and heart, you’ll lose in the end. Coaches LOVE him, teammates LOVE him, gives back MORE than anyone, glad he’s a Leaf. #marnerfanboy

It's ridiculous. Marner has had an amazing season, and, once again, finished the year with more points than anyone else on the roster and 4th best in he entire league! He also dazzled out there, game in and game out, making fools of opposing players. He also played a great defensive game. And so far, he's looked very good in the post season.

But it's not enough for entitled Leaf fans.

They don't deserve great players.

Matthews is a great player. But Marner is right there with him. Together, they are one of the best duos in the league.

So SHADDAP.

:)

I call false on this statement. He has turned the puck over countless times.

Marner is fine, Hyman is not. He's been invisible, and that'the real issue here
I'd agree that Hyman clearly doesn't look like himself thus far.

To me, Marner looks like he's gripping his stick tight and overthinking things a bit. We know how much this means to the guy, he's a big time player. I think he's gonna settle down and start dominating.

Sometimes I would like to see him take the less is more approach in these spots.

On the second replay it clearly showed he had Price so far out of his net that a simple backhand to open net would have resulted in a goal but he tried the most difficult option trying to go around him. This isnt even just a Mitch issue as you see it quite often from alot of our players trying to score the prettiest highlight reel goal possible.

Agree with everything else you posted. Amazing player that doesnt get enough credit for all the ways he impacts the game.
