Yeah, that contract is a risk. It's also the kind you should be jumping at taking as a team.

To me, solid two way centers are the lowest risks you can take.
Offense first players are much bigger risks, because when they have a down year offensively, they're often putrid players.
Whereas if Nico has an off year offensively, his all around game would still make him 2C quality, thus a slight, not gross overpay.

I mean just in this thread we’re criticizing a guy who’s 30 & paid big money that he’s not the same player he was years ago when he inked the deal.

But in the same time we’re also criticizing a 20 year old who’s shown a good base line of play to this point & best years should still be ahead of him that they’re investing too much.

Wonder if Patrick will even get 1/3 of what Hischier got on his 2nd contract? What a difference ONE PICK can make in a Draft.

SIX PICKS.

500k more AAV than Provy with an extra year of control. What's the problem exactly?

More % or cap McKinnon got at time
More than Connor, Nylander and Keller and don’t think he’s as good as any of them. And worse PPG than all of them

Is he close to 2 mill better than TK, not in my view.

The same MacKinnon who paced for 48 points in his 2nd year? Who was viewed as disappointing? Let's not use revisionist history here. It was a different contract climate for RFAs, and he still only peaked at ~60 points. The cap % isn't drastically different, and Hischier is signed 7 years.

Know what position Nylander, Konecny, Connor, and Keller play? Wing. Their approximated value in that 2 year span? 4.3, 3.1, 3.0, 1.7 WAR. Their ages? 21-22 (Nylander....can use 20-21 if you want to use his other 2 year sample, which was worth the same); 20-21 (TK); 21-22 (Connor); Keller (19-20). They were all older. Connor as much as 3 years. How is that a comparison? Hischier at age 18 and 19 paced for 52 and 55 points. He was worth 6 WAR. He is a center. He only scored 6 and 8 PP points in those years too on PP2. Right there is 10-15 points of meat on the bone without much improvement.

Writing off Hischier as "[not] as good as any of them" is basically a discussion ender. I am a Keller fan and believe in his long-term potential, but Hischier is more advanced, better all-around, and produces the same. Signing him to an almost identical deal is a no-brainer. Maybe I should direct you to the Hayes deal in comparison to this "laughable" contract.

Sarcasm noted: the same Hall who played 33 games last year?

None of those players play(ed) with talent, that's for sure. Matthews, Scheifele, Wheeler, Couturier, Giroux -- it's amazing how they overcame that linemate talent deficiency. Well, besides Keller, who has his own red flags in his 2 years that need ironing out.

The 3 I listed all have higher point per games and I think are better and cheaper, looks like I hit a nerve.

Guess we will see. Admit I have only saw him twice so far this year, and he was not good in either of them.
