So the all star game is going to have trackers in the jersey's and puck to test out equipment. Should be fun to see, but also this could be huge for analytics/coaching side of the game.
Bring back the glowing puck!!

So, once again, you're arguing in circles just be the board contrarian.

Contrarian? This all started because I agreed with another poster. It isn't my fault that every time I post something people want to argue with me. No one argued with the guy that posted before me that a #1 doesn't guarantee you anything.

Law school certainly helped you deflect and redirect your conversations.

I picked an item in your list that you inferred was good to have but was not necessarily needed to win a Cup (being good defensively).

I made the claim that you do, in fact, need to be good defensively to win a Cup. It's not nice to have; it's a must.

Somehow we're now talking about needing a good offense, which I would throw a giant 'Captain Obvious' sticker on. Good defensive teams sometimes miss the playoffs because they can't score enough goals. Rarely do good offensive teams miss the playoffs because goals can carry you through a regular season; however, teams that are only good offensively don't win the Cup because they have to play too many teams with good defensive hockey to get there in the playoffs.

Again, nice redirect.

Redirect? I responded directly to your post. I said that you obviously would like to have the best everything, but if you have enough X to compensate for Y, you can still win. You then said you can't win without a good defense. My response is that you can't win without a good offense, which is also true. I've also said (maybe not necessarily in response to you, but in the same thread on the same topic), that you need a lot more than just the good offense/defense/goalie/coach/whatever. You're obviously not going to win with a defense like the Flyers have right now. I'm not arguing that you can win with a ****** defense or a ****** team. What I am saying, however, is the same thing I have been saying throughout this thread...that you can win if you have enough of X (scoring, coaching, defense, goaltending) to compensate for a lack of Y (scoring, coaching, defense, goaltending). If you are scoring at a ridiculous pace, your defense doesn't have to be the best in the league. If your defense is the best in the league, your offense doesn't have to score at a ridiculous pace.

I guess I should have just said, "You are right" after you posted. Oops. Redirect!

For example, you can instantly call up a player's movement patterns like this:

socca-heatmap.jpg

This is the same technology but in soccer, and obviously there would be ways to break down the raw data shown here by time or in hockeys case, a shift. But theres more stuff to be done with it as well. I don't understand how we can't come up with a system where the sensor in the puck can trigger a sensor in the goal to say when it is in or not. If the sensor is in the direct middle of the puck a sensor, under the ice, 1.5 inches (Puck is 3 inches in diameter) back from the entire goal line pointed up would mean the puck would have to cross the goal line completely to trigger the sensor. If its in the dead middle of the puck it wouldn't matter if it was on edge anything, if the sensor went off it was in. The only POSSIBLE way the puck could go in the net and not trigger it would be if it was standing up on end between the goal line and sensor (Puck is 1 inch wide/tall whatever you want to call it.)

I have no idea what point of substance DFF is trying to make.

Anyhow, Minnesotta isn't proof of anything aside from maybe don't rely on big name free agents too much. Their goaltending is terrible, they've been horribly unlucky with injuries, and they have a coach who seems pretty bad (or is at least losing it). Pretty simple really. Like I said before, they've also relies on big name free agents a lot and they aren't very strong at center. Those two problems pale in comparison to the other three though.

Jesus, I hope everything goes better for you Gagne.

“At this time Simon feels that he has to be home with his family and he has the complete support of the Boston Bruins organization with this decision,” said Chiarelli. “Given Simon’s decision not to return to the team, we have to change his status to maintain a full roster. I spoke to Simon about this, and he assured me that we have his full support with this status change.”

“The last month has been extremely difficult for me with my father being sick and his passing,” said Gagne. “To play in the NHL you have to be 100% mentally, emotionally and physically committed to the game. At this time I know that I cannot be close to those levels. The Bruins organization and my teammates have been great to my family and I during this time. When I decided not to return this season, I spoke to Peter and assured him that I did not want the organization or my teammates to be impacted. Together we made the decision that my status would be changed so that the team could have a full active roster. In addition, I would like to thank the fans and the NHL family for all of the support that they have given my family and I during this difficult time – it has truly meant a lot.”

It gets better after a while, Simon....

For those of you who get a kick out of how terrible my "A League" team is.

Today we got out shot 49-11 and lost 4-2 for our 18th straight loss.

I think the flyers will get McDavid before we win.

Make an appeal to someone like Todd Fedoruk to come down and play for you for a game... lives in the area and does loads of charity work! :p:

In his defense, Jim Dowd just finished watching 300 and was merely trying to inspire his team.

Don't feel like looking back to see if it was posted in here but McKenzie says the Flyers wouldn't be afraid to make Babcock a 5 million dollar coach.

http://www.nicholsonhockey.com/wort...nt-worry-about-making-babcock-5-million-coach

“The Philadelphia Flyers have got... And I’ll tell you what – the way their team is trending, and with Berube... and I really like Craig Berube. And maybe they’re going to pull out of it. And they’ve got a lot of issues there. I think Ron Hextall is looking at the team in terms of what they’re building toward, and everything else. And I’m not sure Mike Babcock wants to go to Philadelphia anymore than he would want to go to Toronto, but they’ve got Claude Giroux and some other pieces there. And they’ve got an owner who’s not going to worry about putting a 5 in front of anybody’s salary, and a lot of zeroes after it for a coach.”

Of course we know this but coming from a guy like Bobby Mac has some substance.
