Arizona Coyotes forfeit draft picks over combine scouting violations
The NHL prohibits teams from working out prospects prior to the league’s scouting combine. In Februrary, TSN’s Darren Dreger reported there were “at least 20 incidents” of the Coyotes fitness testing draft-eligible players. At the time, The Athletic’s Craig Morgan reported that the Coyotes didn’t believe they violated the rule, and that a source said the Coyotes merely conducted permitted meetings with prospects and asked that the players “show up for the interviews in a T-shirt and shorts so that team staff could ‘eyeball’ their bodies.”

But the statement from the NHL tells a different story:

“At the outset of the hearing, the club acknowledged that it had violated the policy by conducting physical testing on 2020 draft-eligible players prior to the combine.”

People were hyping him all over this board pre draft. I would hope if the amateur scouts here had an idea how good he could be, I would hope professional guys had an idea too.

This isn’t an inditement of the Flyers scouts for not passing on Patrick and taking Pettersson. They went the safe route and went with consensus. Although it’s interesting that whenever the Flyers have gone safe at the top of the draft, it really hasn’t worked out for them. Ricci, Pitkanen, JVR, and Patrick. The one time they went completely off the board at the top of the draft, Forsberg, it was a grandslam homerun although for another team.
I'm not old enough to assess the Ricci pick, but I'm not sure I see your point. Pitkanen was the last player available in a 4 player draft. And he was a star for a short time before injuries (and possible personality issues). Voracek is the only one going ahead of JVR in a redraft that had a realistic shot of going 2nd overall. The JVR pick looks bad because a HHOFer went 1st overall. That and the Flyers, in a way only they could, traded JVR before his breakout only to sign him on his decline. Flyer fans have never really gotten to see him at his best consistently. I'd say they've been unlucky more than anything. Players that go that early in the draft are naturally safer than the rest.

If you really wanted to make your point you'd point to the Provorov pick. That was a historic draft and they went for safety and left some meat on the bone.

provorov was as high upside high floor a dman ive seen in the draft. What meat was realistically out there?

You could start with the guy taken directly after him.

Pretty much this. It's less important to get high picks than it is to get high picks at the right time. Both Philly and Carolina have picked 2nd overall twice in recent memory. Flyers got JVR (who is fat) and Patrick (who has had some awful f***ing luck). Canes got Eric Staal (who is the leading one of the best drafts ever in goals and points scored) and Svechnikov (who was pacing for 70+ points at 19)

Hell, from 03-06 Shitsburgh picked 1,2,1,2 and could have done much better with two of them, but it didn't matter because the other two were f***ing Crosby and Malkin.

Unfortunately unless it's a slam dunk kind of prospect like McDavid or Eichel, it's hard to really gauge exactly what you're going to get until they get there.

Yeah it’s not like the Flyers were like the Leafs or Sabres from around 2014-16 where they decided before to gut their roster & start over with legitimate prizes at the top of the draft around that time. Obviously Buffalo is still trying to climb out of the cellar for various other reasons that go beyond top picks.

But say what you about Toronto but they have climbed out of the cellar & they do have young top players that they got through the top of the draft. But that was multiple drafts in a row with one where they still won the lottery being the worst team which isn’t a given anymore. You can easily get bumped out to #4 now a days. But if they don’t get Matthews in 2016, they’re a different team right now.

The Flyers situation was ten years apart. The one year they weren’t expecting to be as bad as they were heading into the season & the other one where they were a middle of the road team that luckily jumped double digit spots to #2. The ensuing drafts they were back to drafting noticeably later from the spot.

Like even those teams above that are planning to be terrible are likely doing so with the premise that they’re playing the lottery at a minimum of the next 2-3 years. After that there’s only so much you can do even in a situation where you’re doing everything possible to get the best odds.
