Depending on the college you went to, it could well be the same connection we have to the Flyers. (I mean, over and above the financially abusive relationship, that part's a given.) I went to a school with no D1 sports except lacrosse (we were grandfathered in by virtue of being the second-most successful lacrosse school before the NCAA took over as the governing body of the sport), so I don't have any strong pull in that regard myself.

Beyond that, people tend to bind up memories of good times they've had with the places they were when those things happened, and for a lot of people, a lot of their best memories and connections happened at college.
can confirm i have so many good memories of my college days

The memories are made with the people, not the college
But they are made at college, and as I said, people look fondly on not only the people they were with, but where they were when the good times happened. (There's also an element of appreciation for many people, as we're conditioned to think that degrees open doors for us in our career, particularly if you go to a college with a reputation as a great school, but that's another issue entirely.)

A student died at our school and they didn't even send an email. Not a peep from any higher faculty. The student driven yearbook committee put a whole page dedication in the yearbook though.

College opens doors, but it commands no respect. That's what it's there for. The fact that college is so "well respected" and the alumni turn into this cult (some more than others) in this country is a huge reason why they were allowed to become predatory in the first place. It's exactly what they want

There is a chance I did some grad work at the same school! Or possibly the arch rival. I’m still counting it.

But mostly what you’ve taught me is that 2 of the 3 schools I went to have D1 lacrosse. I had no idea about Drexel. So that makes a major lacrosse power, another apparent D1 team, and a school that wouldn’t pick up a sport if it died on the sidewalk near it.

If you're referring to Hopkins, then yes, but there's a very real chance you're not, because I was looking at only part of the puzzle (really showing that college-level research there.) I was basing the "second-most successful" thing on Wingate Trophy wins; Hopkins won 11, behind only Navy with 15. We're also second in NCAA championships, with 9 to Syracuse's 10. Of course, only after having said that do I scroll down below the actual D1 championship list to see that we claim a further 24 championships prior to the establishment of the Wingate Trophy.

I was! Drexel, NYU, and Hopkins. I like Northeastern cities.

Yeah there are many colleges that don't behave that way at all

You don't have to ask if someone went to Penn State. They'll just tell you.

People who have an actual connection to the college they went to baffle me. You are a walking check to colleges anywhere. They don't care about you. College is a business and it should be treated as such: an investment for your future. Do you have pride in your vanguard account too? Not to mention the American college/University system is predatory and deserves no respect to start with
Funny thing is that I still root for Penn St and Villanova even though I went to New Mexico and Washington haha. I have zero attachment to the schools I went to from a cheering perspective. Thanks for the piece of paper, though

I started supporting the Flyers while living in New Zealand, but that was in 1993 so I wasn't just picking the most popular/successful team the way so many fans of teams like the Chicago Bulls, Dallas Cowboys and Manchester United did in the 90s.

Ya’ll naming all these big college fan bases as cultish making the overall point that, that’s what creates a multi-billion dollar industry. It’s a glorified minor league sport that taps into other elements to transcend that fact & put the sport on a level financially where they’re making more than some major sports leagues.

You're a walking check to most places/things in your life. For example, the Flyers team we root for. That doesn't stop you from passionately supporting them though, does it?

I agree with a lot of your thoughts about college. Doesn't stop me from rooting for my alma mater's sports teams and being grateful for my 4 years worth of memories there and the Penn Staters I've met and continue to meet.

I haven't passionately supported this team for the better part of 3 seasons my lad

They'll probably be competitive again before the Flyers. Also they have 20 years of recent success to tide them over.

3rd best P% since the 2005 lockout.

Most playoff wins.

3 Cups.
Why exactly will they likely be competitive again before the Flyers? They'll be about 3-4 years behind us in terms of a rebuild, the GM responsible for their past success is gone. The owner responsible for their past success sold the team. The players who won those cups will all be retired. Is there just something in the water in Pittsburgh?

I nearly put something in my post about "forget the last x number of years" for this exactly reason lol.

The point is you're a fan. You have been a fan. You will be a fan again. You have 28k posts in a group dedicated to Flyers fandom. And the fact that you are nothing but a check to the Flyers, Eagles, Sixers, Phillies or any other team you support won't stop you from being a fan.

Btw, if you think I've loved every single year of Penn State football, you'd be wrong. From JoePa fully embracing nepotism by letting his son run the blandest offense in the nation to Franklin's gameday decision making and plenty of stops in between, I've been frustrated too.
