Greer is cleaning up the MESS left behind by the previous GM . Letting Pav go so you can sign Kane , signing Karlsson for that type of term and salary despite him not playing very well leading into that contract . Last year was his first good year in quite a while so using it to get rid of his contract is a tuff but good move .

The Penguins are in win now so it fits and did not cost them a bunch but I do not think it will help a bunch , they are to old .
I don’t think the owner there wanted to retain much money which limited the market for Karlason. They aren’t all like the Flyers ownership.

Dubas masterclass

More importantly, a metro team gets much better.
Penguins get older, slower and lose their depth. Still jammed for cap space. Back up goalie is who? What happens when inevitably Letang and Malkin get hurt? Dubas is delusional with this trade. The future for the Penguins is none too bright. A quick, talented young team like the Devils or Carolina are will blow them out of the arena.

When Letang gets hurt they have Karlsson, who just played 82 games

It’s not even a question if the team is better with him and without Petry and Granlund.
I realize that +/- isn’t the greatest stat but last season EK had 101 points and still was -26. He hasn’t been + for the last four seasons. His days of being a strong defensive force on the ice disappeared when he messed up his ankle. He’s a good player but not the same guy that he was before the injuries caught him.

Love the move by SJ.

To move the player before the season starts, any injuries occur, and solidify the tank.

Smart move by Grier.

Crosby 35
Malkin 37
Letang 36

They've invested entirely to much in getting those 3 another cup before the window is completely shut. Crosby and Malkin both 80+ point players. Im assuming they are all together for maybe another two years. I don't see the penguins starting there rebuild truly until 2026.

I could care less about an older metro team picking up a 33 year older player when we are at least 3-4 years away from anywhere near anything.

Pens fans will have fun watching their team play even if they are unlikely to be in the Finals. And they have three Crosby era Cups in the bag already. The Flyers haven’t had a decent team to watch since before Covid and won their only two Cups almost 50 years ago.

The one advantage to being old is remembering them! Even my Phila Wings haven't won one in 22 years. Ugh.

Yeah, they've got the luxury to be able to do this with fan support even if it's a glorified retirement exhibition. Their situation is wildly different from the Flyers.

That shows how bad Hextall is/was. The expectation for that organization both internally & externally was to go out & be active in the now with zero regards to the future. Hextall went after bad secondary & depth players based off past reputation.
Yeah, really odd that they would hire him in the first place without making sure they were both on the same page with what was expected. Sounds like something Philly would do

Don’t need them to win a cup. Just be a materially better team that beats us when we play them

Exactly this. If the Flyers are ever in a situation where they have won 3 cups, 22 playoff rounds and finished 1st or 2nd in their division in 13 out of 18 years I am fine with messing up the next rebuild a bit to watch the players I will for sure love giving it a few last hail mary shots vs blowing up it before they retire.

You could go the entire rest of your hockey fandom career without another run like that, enjoy every last second of a core of players that you will likely love more then any other core you ever see again.

Karlsson is an upgrade, but also redundant with Letang, unless they think Letang is finished and they need a PP1 QB.
In which case they're rearranging deck chairs.
The 1st and 2nd will hurt a talent pipeline ranked 29th by Wheeler in January.
And if this was Karlsson's "last hurrah" season, they're looking at $10M a year for the next 4 seasons.

Pens are really cap strapped, they're basically working off Guentzel's LTIR, but he's supposed to return by Christmas.
Next season they only gain Carter's $3M.

Jarry is a middle of the road goalie.
Graves was signed to a 6yr/'$27M deal by Dubas. Pettersson is a solid D-man, but your bottom three are Joseph, Ruhwedel and Ty Smith.

Old team that has to hope for a miracle from the Hockey Gods, aging curves suggest a collapse is more likely:
Crosby (36), Malkin (37), Rust (31), Rakell (30), Smith (32), Carter (38), Ellers (34), Acciari (31), Nieto (30)
Karlsson (33), Letang (36), Ruhwedel (33).

There is no such thing as Karlsson being redundant. What an idea rofl.

Your ridiculous anti-dubas agenda is showing with that statement. It's the same thing you've always done with anyone who outperforms your idols in management.
