I think we're see two good but not great teams riding hot goaltenders.
Which is more typical than dynasties in the SC Finals - we just remember the dynasties.

That's why I push the "build a good, sustainable team and hope to get lucky" strategy.
Don't bleed assets at the TDL, keep the talent pipeline filled, be patient with young players and compete every season.
As Florida shows, there are too many variables year to year to justify making a big push.

TB is the exception to the rule, but they have two mitigating factors: they were already close to elite when they made that series of trades to get over the top, and they're exceptional at finding value in the draft after the 2nd rd, so trading 1st and 2nd rd picks have a smaller impact on them than most teams.

You said the Avalanche team last year wasn't great which we know was stated because it fit a narrative. You're doing the same again this year.

To the bolded, what the hell does that even mean? Stop.

Meh. Dubas took over a great situation, an elite core under 25, then goes out and adds JT instead of building a team around his core, much like Edmonton, a top heavy offensive team that never put together a balanced squad.

Why was he capped out? He inherited Marleau but also made his own bed.

He traded 3 1st rd picks in the last 5 drafts, #15 in 2020, Amirov, hasn't had a cup of coffee, only player from five drafts on the Leafs in the playoffs was Knies, #57-2021.

Basically, he went all in with trades and FA signings and came up short, again and again.

Dubas had a hand in making that situation. He didn't come in out of nowhere.

Your agenda is ridiculous. It's Sullivan/Trotz all over again where you cannot stand that other coaches were better than Hakstol so you dreamed up reasons they weren't better. You similarly cannot stand that Dubas is better than Fletcher, and so you're doing the same thing. Likewise for Zito.

I don’t hold it against other people for enjoying it, but it’s an ARPG designed completely opposite to my personal tastes.

It looks pretty and polished both in-engine and in cutscenes, but has absolutely zero depth to the gameplay, gearing, or build variety. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying that as the shallow experience it sets out to be. It succeeds in what it’s trying to be. It’s just not for me.

Hold up, my necromancer, Scrotor, has a ton of potential builds available. I don't know if every class has so many viable builds, but there is way more depth than I expected even from the beta.

If you disagree we will have to wrestle to the death on a jetty.

As Florida shows, there are too many variables year to year to justify making a big push.

Last year they went all in, traded (2) 1sts, 3rd, 4th Tippett and got blown out in the second round.
This year they made a "reload" move, trading Huberdeau, Weegar and 1st for Tkachuk, reducing their talent base in the short-run but adding a young, keystone piece for the long run - and are now in the SC Finals.

Just shows there are too many variables you can't control (Bob's brain for example) to push all your chips in the center of the table to try and make a PO run.
Just focus on team building and limit TDL moves to low cost additions to fix minor holes - if you have major holes, you're not ready.

The best teams in recent memory, Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh and TB.
The best SC seasons:
Detroit 2001-02, great regular season, 16-7
Anaheim 2006-07, good but not great regular season, but 16-5 in the POs
Detroit 2007-08, great regular season, 16-6
Chicago 2009-10, great regular season, 16-6
Chicago 2012-13, great regular season, 16-7
Colorado 2022-23, good but not great regular season, but 16-4 in the POs

A great season to me is not just points, but being a top offensive and defensive team, dominating play in the regular season.
Then you have to roll through the playoffs.

Again, they did not go all in.

That very statement is disingenuous but at least you took out the "27 goal scorer" part of it so that's progress. A team being able to pull off the trade that they did to get Tkachuk means that they didn't go all in.

You're taking your stance and working backwards to prove it. We see through it.

Got something of value for a guy who was likely walking to UFA. I understand NJ not wanting to pay that contract with Hughes & Nemec in the fold even if Severson is pretty good.

So NJ is possibly looking for a veteran RHD?

Columbus should be pretty improved next year. It sounds like they’re gonna be drafting Carlsson so that should be another potential new addition to their lineup.

I assume Columbus definitely plans on using Provorov as a mid pair guy now. If he buys in that could be good for them. Werenski & Severson should take most of the juicy usage there. Hell even Boqvist should be ahead of the pecking order offensively at least.

Edit: On second look at their defense now. I wonder if they potentially try to trade Gudbranson in a deal for Hayes?

Werenski - Severson
Boqvist - Provorov
Bean - Peeke

Jircek waiting in the wings as well. It’s hard to really imagine them using Gudbranson still with all those options even if the contract is relatively new.

Friggin Fanatics.

Adam Fox already gets a Mitchell & Ness blouse and it's a style that is readily available because it's the style that's still being worn on the ice.
