I'm a sucker for a good heartbreaking upset. Edmonton fans really thought this was the year.

The Edmonton media should be a hoot.

The Kings acquiring Fiala's rights for #19 + Faber, Danault as a UFA for $5.5MM x 6 years, and Arvidsson for #40 + #84 in a 12 month period is a perfect representation of the Flyers' failures in their "win now" mandate. That's an entire proven top 6 line created out of thin air at a relatively cheap cost on multiple axes. Whether or not the Flyers should've made moves like this is a separate discussion from the fact they totally fell flat on their face trying.
The irony is that since they shouldn't have made these kind of moves in the first place, they are better off b/c CF screwed it up, otherwise we'd be looking at last decade for 2-3 more years - alternating between losing the first round and missing the POs and picking between 15-25.

Even in failure Chuck Fletcher succeeds.

That erases his one mistake, right?
Not sure it's a mistake any more. Risto was by metrics our second best D-man after York (Seeler's numbers were inflated by sheltered usage). If he keeps improving, he could garner a haul next summer (a defensively reliable physical RHD at 3x5 will be a hot commodity). Which would probably cause heads on this board to explode.

TDA on the other hand . . .

If Briere can get a good package for Provorov, after he stunk out the joint, . . .

That’s sarcasm, right?

For the price of Ghost and all those draft picks and the contract he got, Risto needs to be a hell of a lot better than "2nd best on a bad D corps" to avoid being a mistake. Holy shit.

Chuck is gone. You don't have to defend him anymore.

Meh. Never should have traded for Risto, then should have then moved him at the TDL.
But if he keeps improving, might get a lot of the assets back.
For some reason, big physical RHDs are in high demand around the NHL.

No, he wasn't.

Risto had the 4th best ES GA/60 out of the seven regular dmen and the 6th best ESP/60.

Sanheim had significantly better results on offense and defense while playing more minutes, playing against tougher opposition, and never getting to take an extended sheltered usage holiday with Seeler on the 3rd pairing. Ristolainen also benefitted from almost never having to play with the Flyers worst defender, DeAngelo

Ristolainen ES partners
Sanheim 445:48
Provorov 313:40
Seeler 304:46
York 80:21
DeAngelo 37:42
