Hakstol got a 2017-18 team with mediocre goalies and half a dozen players that should have been on the waiver wire to 98 points, but people thought he sucked b/c they could only take the Pens to six games in the first round with Provorov and Couts playing injured.

That team played Filppula 16:29 a night, Weal, Lehtera, Weise, Leier, Amac, Hagg, Manning.
Only 4 forwards had 30+ ES points (G, Couts, Voracek, TK).

They got exposed by the Pens: playoff GF/GA (ES):

Seattle improving by 40ish pts over last year is pretty crazy

Statistically speaking they have been so lucky it’s crazy. They lead the league in GF but are 25th in xGF. Couple that with being a very good defensive team, and they are going to win a lot of games.

They weren't playing scrub roles.

Deslauriers is the 12th forward playing 8-10 minutes a night, substitute a better player and you wouldn't notice much difference.

Half that defense was marginal at best.

Maybe. What's odd is they have very good xgar and gar numbers per evolving hockey. I don't know enough about how team xgar/gar is calculated. That stat was originally meant to describe an individual player, so I am not sure how well it extrapolates to team description.

Also, They are very good in the NZ, very good at getting out of their end with possession and very good at getting opportunities off the rush. The RTSS dataset that is used to generate the NST xGF stat cannot account for rush shots vs cycle shots, so it might be missing some value in their shots as well.

Could you imagine all the stuff someone like Lindros could truly tell us about this organization? The only reason why the fan base hated him was because Clarke was quick to go to the papers and talk to the media to give his side of everything and put all the blame on him.
