This is amusing, since L Schenn is the ultimate "dinosaur" D-man.

This is a guy who from 2016-2020 could be considered worse than Risto.
So it does make sense to see if you can "fix" Risto and make it easier to dump him.
There's no fixing what isn't broken. That's just who he is as a player. Keep banging that drum though.

It isn't that Fletcher is bad, it's that he did exactly what the organization wanted him to do.
The cancer is deep into the bones.

I really don't understand how in Year 4, we're still discounting every possibility of getting players of a certain type without getting ones that suck.

If Bob Clarke or Paul Holmgren or anyone else insisted on a Risto archetype, he could have gotten one that wasn't terrible. They do exist. Even on that 5/23 contract, think of how much better off they are today if they signed Oleksiak and kept the picks.

And please don't tell me he's right-handed. Oleksiak could stickhandle with a prosthetic trunk and still come out ahead.

*Edit* Look, even Google is making fun of the number of times I've had to figure out how long it's been since he got the job.

Ghost rebounded when Chychrun returned.
Chychrun and Valimaki (former 1st rd pick obtained on waivers) have been >> the other Zona D-men, including Ghost.

Dumping Ghost was all about AV, AV was all about "winning now." Risto was about "winning the Flyer way."
Path dependence.

Fletcher is bad. As president and GM with his favorite crony as VP and AGM, he is the power structure. Anything he is doing, is something he wants to do. That what he wants happens to align with what the Cronyarchy wants, well, that's why Clarke wanted him hired.

Wait, I thought you weren't absolving Fletcher of blame?

okay so I didnt watch this game to realize, but the extended clip makes this highlight soooo much better

Size and grit become irrelevant when the sizey and gritty players can't even catch or challenge players with skill. Skill always wins. The Flyers despise it though, and prefer the traits that always lose on their own.

In honor of Charles' 4th anniversary, let's look at how long ago he was hired. That was December 3rd, 2018.

  • Bryce Harper wasn't a Phillie.
  • Jimmy Butler was a Sixer.
  • Andrew Luck was a Colt.
  • The Netflix Formula 1 show wasn't a thing.
  • The spire of Notre Dame hadn't burned yet.
  • People only suspected that parents paid their way into USC.
  • The British PM's office has since changed hands three times.
  • Jeffrey Epstein hadn't even been arrested yet.
  • PancingDanther wasn't even a glint in his mother's eyes.

I suggested Oleksiak years ago b/c he plays the right side, is physical, and was available at a decent price.
But it wouldn't make that much difference - since it was the same bad strategy, with better tactics.

Ironically, Ellis was actually the right idea, a true 1D with elite offensive skills. But still a win now move given his age - the injury was bad luck, but his age meant it was a short-term move (even though the cost was basically zero).

Getting a pretty good player instead of a truly horrible player wouldn't make a difference?

Are you sure about that? If there's anything that Fletcher has definitively proven, it's that getting bad players instead of good players matters a lot.

Nothing matters until the PTB are gone. That Briere guy, that those same people have groomed, is going to do a great job!

Anyone that watched just 40 seconds of a Hughes at the USNTDP knew he was this good. He was so far ahead of everyone on the ice.

There really is a certain skill level where you can’t help but question if people have eyes.

those threads/posts no longer show up with the broken dogshit search function.

You didn't even check with me before giving up.

Luckily for most on here, those threads/posts no longer show up with the broken dogshit search function.

The most simple thing I could have done which as not using the search function.

When Meltzer suggested they hire Zito as an AGM we had this gem...

Don't like this idea.
If Fletcher disagrees with Holmgren/Clarke had a big item then they'll use Zito against him.

Zito will serve to keep Fletcher in line

He typed the ****ing thing into Google, you doofus.
Nope, i'm not that talented or smart. I kept typing random numbers into the number of pages until I got around 12/3/18.

OOOH This one is spicy...

The key to Fletcher is whether he trades from the young core or the second tier.
As long as he trades second tier guys and 2nd and 3rd rd picks (and hopefully follows the Hextall trick of always getting a later pick thrown into a deal) he can't screw up the rebuild.
However, if he trades Frost, Farabee, Myers, Hart or 1st rd picks he should be dumped into the Delaware with concrete shoes.

If you trade a 4th and Sushko for a 35 year one year patch at 3C, meh.
If you trade a 1st and Frost for an expensive big name 30 year old with his best years behind him to win now, disaster.

The third possibility which won't mess up the rebuild is the "name" for "name" trade, Voracek or Ghost for a similar type player to shake up things, say a fast RW sniper or a veteran (but not ancient) RHD. That may piss people off but won't have a long-term impact as long as Fletcher gets good value in return.
