I mean yeah but rentals don't return that much. Calgary is going to be competitive next year. This trade pretty much assures it, so I wouldn't count on it.
Ya true, pacific is a wife open. Seattle got better, kings got better, flames - maybe a tad worse?, ducks got strome/mactavish now. Gunna be an interesting division

Tkachuk would scare me. While he's only 25 next season, he's coming off a career year with a 3.25 pp/60, next highest season was 2.27 three years ago - how much is maturity, how much is a fluke fed by JG having his career year. They committed a lot of money to a guy who might be no more than a 1LW/2LW.

Huberdeau is also coming off a career year, but has a better track record the last few years. But he's four years older.

With Huberdeau and Weegar and a 1st, Calgary has more options, they can see if they can work out a reasonable extension, move them at the TDL or let them walk after the season if they're a legitimate playoff contender. Tkachuk made it clear he wasn't signing there.

So Fla trades 2 guys that likely told them they were not re-signing, and got a great player who would.

And maybe Flames think they can get Hubs signed.

Weird how s cap team just traded for Tkachuk. Must have been dome work involved. Too much for Fletch to think about.

Both Huberdeau & Weegar would be 30 years old entering into the first year of their next contracts. So if they’re long term deals they could extend late into their 30’s. For Tkachuk you have him locked up from age 24-33. So you get a better window there.

It sounds good player for player in Calgary but I doubt they’re in position to trade either Huberdeau or Weegar next deadline (they shouldn’t be that bad now & the Pacific isnt good) & I doubt they re-sign.

More like having the right players to match salary cap and Calgary's wish list.
Huberdeau and Weegar counted $9.1M against the Florida cap.

Though the Florida defense is looking paper thin, Weegar played 23 minutes last year at RHD.
Ekblad, Forsling, Gudas, Montour, Carlsson?, Sjalin? Staal?

Would have guessed Calgary would have went for more contract certainty with their return. You would have gotten lesser players than these two of course but could have potentially had guys locked up past next year.

Florida has to make these next few years count because four straight years potentially without a first is tough.

Problem for Florida is they swap Tkachuk for Huberdeau this year, but lose Marchment and Weegar (along with Chariot and Giroux).
So for 2022-23 they're a thinner team and now $3M over the Cap.
2023-24 they'll have more cap room.

Florida got the best player but Calgary did well considering Tkatchuk wanted out and forced it. Florida has a paper thin defense now and still have Bobrovsky. Not sure how they unload him.

Tkachuk was still an RFA and was arbitration bound this summer, so CGY was still in control.

I think both teams did well, but Huberdeau and Weegar are both UFA next summer
