A blanket statement which blankets a large majority of players from youth hockey to the NHL. Yes there are players who break that mold; you listed Giroux and Michkov. Those guys are also all-stars and elite players in the league, not your average or even above average player.

Yep. This is SOP for hockey.

He's playing with the best partner he has ever had in his career. Is it strange to you we see a better version of Sanheim when he is routinely paired with a more talented defender, and not being shuffled around with Manning, MacDonald, Risto, Seeler on his off-side, etc...? I don't think the York-Sanheim is a good idea long term, but they are out of options (have no options) and so are playing their two best defensemen (who are 2nd pairing) on the top pair and that makes sense.
Sanheim played well with Braun on his right side.
He's playing well right now with Risto.

2020-21 Sanheim - Myers 383 minutes xGF 49.60%, HDCF 45.18%
2020-21 Sanheim - Braun 177 xGF 54.74%, HDCF 54.40%
2020-21 Sanheim - Provorov 152 xGF 53.08%, HDCF 52.32%
2021-22 Sanheim - Risto 981 xGF 47.47%, HDCF 46.54%
2021-22 Sanheim - Provorov 157 xGF 44.79%, HDCF 48.50%
2022-23 Sanheim - Risto 432 xGF 43.65%, HDCF 45.62%
2022-23 Sanheim - Braun 332 xGF 51.10%, HDCF 49.32%
2022-23 Sanheim - TDA 331 xGF 39.58%, HDCF 37.47%
2023-24 Sanheim - York 1050 xGF 49.70%, HDCF 50.25%

Think the difference is with 3 more years of experience, he doesn't need to be protected by his partner. Experience matters for D-man.

The pairing with Myers was rough, b/c Myers was so mistake prone.

Which is why they have Seeler with Drysdale, you wouldn't want to inflict Drysdale on say Andrae.
