They had plans, but the mayor basically told them to go pound sand

That's crazy lmao

The official Coyotes account tweeted this on Friday last week

Then a couple days later the mayor of scotsdale basically says yea not happening, nobody consulted us and it won't work xD

Is this a real business? What the hell is going on?

The mayor of Scottsdale doesn’t seem to have any real power unless maybe he has donors who are interested in the land. The parcel is part of Phoenix, and that’s where the resources are coming from. Obviously it’s of interest being right on the border, but preferably you’d like him to support it.

If anything, it just proves how poor the relationships Meruelo has had in Arizona. He was kicked out of Glendale and skunked in Tempe. Scottsdale is supposed to be where ‘the most fans are.’

But if the mayor is basically saying kick rocks wouldn't that make it basically impossible for Meruelo to build an arena there? I'm assuming they aren't funding it themselves and are expecting the city to pay for some of it.

They say they’re funding all of it and asking for nothing from taxpayers, which includes financing the waterlines, sanitation, and utilities from Phoenix. Too good to be true? Seems like it. But I’ve yet to see anything that disputes that.

They should take a page out of the Utah Jazz's playbook and just ironically keep the name "Coyotes," with the Kachina, in Salt Lake City. Slap a Mormon Tabernacle logo on the shoulder or something and call it a day. Who cares? Preserving the Kachina is the only thing that matters.
Ryan Smith put out a survey soliciting names on Monday. I’m sure that’s something billionaires do because they’re bored and not for specific reasons. Some of the Arizona people obviously felt that, which is understandable, I don’t think anyone expected this to explode today.

Utah has a shitload of coyotes. It wouldn't even be ironic to keep the name and styling! Easy mode rebrand.

Unfortunately, the Hopi people aren't from Utah. No one actually cares about coyotes. To hell with coyotes. Even Peter Coyote. It is simply a vessel for the Kachina. If we lose the Coyote, we lose the Kachina. Unless they do like Kachina Brigham Young. I think that would be......problematic.

I have to say too while I’ve made jokes & criticized the Phoenix/Arizona situation but there was very little to invest into there from an on ice product. Their high mark as a franchise was a rag tag team with the likes of Doan & Whitney being their top players which unsurprisingly was short lived. They inherited a decent team from Winnipeg & even acquired a relatively big name in Roenick from the outside in their early years.

Outside of that it was completely miserable with OEL & Keller being really the only higher end players they drafted over that time & they were almost a decade a part.

If you were a potential fan or potential quality investor what the hell was there really there to invest your time/money into there?

If they do ultimately move to Salt Lake City & attract a potential quality ownership I do think there is some potential pieces in place going into there to work with.

Didn’t like the previous ownership (or maybe that was two ownership groups ago lol) basically take advantage of the NHL’s desperation to keep the team in Arizona?

I don’t think it’s correct. Meruelo was a minority owner first, and then bought out Andrew Barroway, so probably closer to $700m
