Ovie getting the record takes nothing away from Gretzky. Just the same as it won't diminish his legacy if he doesn't get there.

I have watched Elliott play his 500th game as flyer, just the same as Nick Schultz getting 1000 games under his belt and that Yandle abomination.

I actually respect guys like Getzlaf or Datsyuk who leave on their own terms rather than hang on for dear life through broken backs, hip replacements or bouncing on the 4th lines Jumbo Joe style.

Don’t care if he gets it or not but I do think it is/was a tougher task than some were acting like even before this season. Obviously with this season he’s having & at his current advanced age I doubt he gets it.

Not cheering for him (Ovechkin, same reasons as Curu plus his hit on Jagr in Vancouver) one bit. But I will be cautious, remembering how much of a "fresh air" Selanne got again in his last seasons. Despite being seen as finished after his COL times

I hope he does it but he's my all time favorite player. Given his rapid decline and the fact that his team sucks ass it's looking less likely.

FWIW (in response to Deadpool's specific query) my 64 year old dad also said he "wouldn't mind" seeing it happen, but he's always liked Ovi too.

Records are meant to be broken and I would like it broken while Gretzky is alive. He has always spoken about how he is rooting for his records to be broken and how he'll be in attendance to shake the hand of the guy who does it. Ovechkin is likely the only guy who has a shot to do it before Gretzky dies.

I also like Ovechkin the player. He's the only non-Flyer I've collected memorabilia of as an adult.

I have been skeptical in the past about him getting there given how old he would have to be when he finally got within range, but his last few seasons were more productive than expected. This year's drop off has been shocking.

My dad is in his 70's and is cheering for Ovi to break the record.

I know the Caps probably won’t do it, bc they lose their main marketing piece - but moving him to a better team with some retention would allow him to break the record.

Not sure I see it on the Capitals squad, even if they dip into FA.

Every time we talk my father asks how many goals Ovi has this season, what it means in perspective of total regular season goals (if pace-adjusting) and how many still left till Gretzky. When Ovi was still scoring at good pace and the record seemed inevitable, he casually/100% seriously asked if someone could just break his leg Tanya Harding style.

I don't have such extreme views, but sure as hell wish he won't do it. Save Crimean children of whatever the hell was that t-shirt + Putin in his Instagram profile pic was bad enough, didn't even need the current war.

The thing I can't untangle is whenever I try to figure out what went wrong in Quebec, it never seems like the team was hurting for money (though I'm pretty sure I've seen vigorous arguments both ways on that). I see very mixed reviews on the owner and the desire of anyone to deal with him. But it's struck me as odd that a profitable location has been ignored for this long. Maybe there are French language sources that clarify it all and I'd rather peel my face than sort through all that.

I assume some bean counters have determined the potential gain from expanding TV markets in the US is worth more than the gate revenue and coverage of a Quebec team. But we are also surely at a point where there isn't much more TV money to be gained at this point. What markets are neglected? A Utah team potentially replaces Arizona down there. Making the Coyotes financially stable by putting them in Quebec would mean they require less revenue sharing and should boost the league overall. It's a moneypit, and Salt Lake City could possibly go the same way; at least eliminate one of the money pits.
The owner sold them to a man from Colorado and he wanted a team back in his home state if I remember correctly

It really is amazing how many people are so upset about a guy taking a slap shot into an empty net, like, who the hell really cares, he was scoring anyway. It's funny reading the outrage from the retired meatheads, like Jay Rosehill, who are so upset about it
My friend did exactly this a month ago and the other team laughed. It was in the championship, and we all pay to play.

Morgan needs to f***ing relax. You lost a game in February regardless of the slapshot.

That sweet, sweet, expansion fee will be milked as many times as they can. This league is getting to 34 teams in the very near future and then probably going to go up from there.

They absolutely shouldn't because of the talent pool but this is the NHL.
For sure. I’m betting on 36 teams by 2032.

Yeah, it makes no sense. The people that have a problem with it seem to be really bothered by it. Who cares how he put the puck in the net. It's not like he took a shot in goal, with the goalie in the net, 3 seconds after the whistle blew. He scored a goal, get over it and yourself
