I’ve been digging into the KHL scoring rate changes because of Michkov. The NHL really is pulling away from everyone else in talent level. That’s the takeaway. The gap is getting bigger. The fun question is why.

Llike to see the stats on younger players joining the NHL, if NHL clubs are more willing to play 19-21 year olds, they're going to reduced the talent level in other leagues. Fewer players assigned to the AHL, and more SHL and KHL players spending less time in those leagues.

This would mostly apply to the best talent, but that would also have the biggest impact.

It's wild to me that Boston has managed to stay successful over the past 15 years. They've survived trading superstars and drafting poorly.
Yeah, you'd think this is the season when it ends, but they keep on truckin' (for now).
Bergeron, Krecji, Hall, Foligno, Orlov gone,

Picked up Zacha for cheap from NJ (Haula) last year, Piotras C (19) #54-2022 was a find, Shattenkirk D (35) FA, Morgan Geekie C (FA). Lohrei D #58-2020 is getting a look.

Of course, when your goalies combine for .946 Sv%, who needs talent?
Still, they're 7th in xGF%, ain't bad when your centers are Coyle, Zacha, Piotras and Geekie.

KHL also went to smaller NHL size ice in last few years and scoring has reduced - I think - in part to that as well.

BUT the KHL is also losing more talent to North America than they used to:

Russians playing in NHL and AHL:

2013-14: 53
2014-15: 51

2021-22: 106
2022-23: 96

Those ~50 extra players would mostly be playing in the KHL 10 years back.

And this explosion has really been in the last ~5 years.

23 teams, 49 or so players - take 2 of your top 6 players off every team and quality would be reduced substantially.

Tbf it is probably not 2 of top 6 players...

as of the ~50 extra guys who are in North America vs 10 years ago? Probably only 40 would be KHL regulars. As some of the Russian AHLers would be VHLers tbh. And of those 40? Probably ~30 would be top 6/top 4 level in KHL.

BUT still. Basically each team is losing ~1.4 top 6/4 guys... and another ~0.5 or so regular depth guys. Which is a lot.

You also have to wonder if there's a quality fall off in imported players.

All things held equal, who in their right mind would rather play in Russian than say Sweden or Liiga or the Czech league? You have to live there for six months.

With the ruble falling, and the scary political atmosphere, Russian teams will struggle to overpay enough to intice better players.

If it were up to me, Marchand would be out of the league by now. Did Reaves tune him up after?
The hypocrisy of this league is getting a bit too much.
Of course not. He just sat on the bench and ran his mouth, much like Nicky D would do. Good thing those guys are in the lineup to help prevent those things from happening though...

You also have to find out why CBJ is unhappy with Johnson, IQ, effort or just not willing to be patient with a young player.

Good ole rat boy up to his old tricks. Sounds like Liljegren is going to miss significant time

Toronto media and fans are losing their mind.

They are pissed that once again, not 1 Leaf player responded to Marchand doing this. Not only no guy on the ice but also guys like Domi and Bertuzzi who was seen laughing at Marchand. Also Ryan Reeves did nothing but they said they sort of understand due to size difference but could have still went at him, but didn't.

Also freaking how Matthews did not start in OT, yet again. Starting David Kampf to try and win the face off, and he lost it anyway.

I wanted to pull my hair out watching this video.

2.5 minutes talking about a possible 1st overall prospect, and there isn’t ONE thing said about his actual game. It’s cliches, small sample obsession, and made-up psychology. I got dumber for having watched this.

Any time someone makes a comment about professional scouts knowing better, I want that person to consume a wheel of maggot cheese.

That the Habs thought this wouldn't embarrass the franchise by being released says all you need to know.
