Here’s the kicker this year too, any line that wasn’t going the biggest suggestion I heard “move Hyman there”. That says a lot about how important he was to this team, yes we can’t afford him now. Also yes, we’re worse now.
We are worse now (at the moment) and with our limited salary people still want to fill out with Galchenyuk/Engvall/Mich/etc making low dollar. They don’t stack up.
Our bottom 6 is bad.
We need to commit at least 8-10 on a quality 3rd line. A quality 3C around 4 mil.
With talent in the bottom 6.

Then 2 top 6 forward needed. We have to improve around not cheap out for 4 guys.

Guy has been a walking injury the past couple years. Plays a great style of hockey but doesnt help if hes not in the line up. That style of play is conducive to more injuries going forward as well. Would like to keep him but not for big money and not for long term

How in the hell did they "come up short" of the semi's when they didn't even win a round?

"to not go far enough: be insufficient The shot came up short of the target. The state education budget came up short last year."

Did they reach the semi-finals? No. Therefore they didn't reach the target, meaning they came up short.

This makes no sense. You can also sign guys for nothing too..
Cap space is what you get when guys walk, you can use that.
Unless you're rebuilding, letting players be used as own rentals is not horrible.
I can’t make sense of anything you’re arguing. We “will be fine” without Hyman is cluelessness personified. Cheers.

Agreed but you should be able to get two quality forwards for what Hyman commands or what your final offer for Hyman is. Toss 65 and 47 overboard and that should get you another quality UFA forward.
There's a lot of assumptions there. Namely 1 major assumption is that these $2 - 2.5M forwards are quality forwards. FA forwards in that price range are just as likely to be worse than the likes of Mikheyev or Engvall. The 2nd major assumption is that Dubas has any feel how to pick the right kind of support player.

We were in a good position to make the semi-finals but came up short. It is really easy to make the right decisions in hindsight.

GM's are hired and fired based on results. Should have's, could have's mean nothing.
Plus this team has no compete when it matters most

If you have a ton of picks and keep feeding the team with young cheap talent (not plugs) his model works. The trouble now, our prospects after this last wave of Roberts, Sandin and Lil, looks thin and only getting worse. He traded too many picks to win now, so we’re left with no win now and not much coming.

The fantasy died when they signed an $11M forward to play on their second line, then followed with two more $11M for the first line.

Handsomely paid players at the top makes it really tough on the middle and lower class. This was always going to happen. Biggest problem is that they need 4-5 Hymans for their bottom 9 and they’re about to lose their only one.

Real tough player to replace, even if it makes better business sense to move on.
the fantasy died when covid happened and the cap flatlined. anytime you have a chance to pick up a tavares you do it. ya it sucks that Matthews and Marner are a bit overpaid. you can look around the league and almost every team has contracts they dont like. id rather they over pay their young stars than the likes of Lucic, Neal, Okposo, Eriksson and Skinner.

great news if true , this guy has Clarkson 2.0 written all over him , hopefully he signs in our division and f***s their cap

at least this is one positive of Dubas destroying our cap , lol

also we have enough big cap hits regressing -Tavares/Muzzin- without adding another one

5 goals/13pts in 32 playoff games won't be missed

i dont know much about their prospects but you might want to double check this. including amirov they have some pretty good prospects in the next wave.

Exactly. He is so overrated around here because we have no one else like him. He is not a top 6 guy on a top contending cup contending team.

2-3M in savings from Matthews and Marner doesn’t move the needle.

In most instances I’d agree with you, sign the player. But the one exception would be if the team already had a 20 year old franchise centre, and 3 expensive RFA contracts to negotiate in a year.

For a long time, I didn't think things would end up like this regarding Hyman's situation with the team. It's not necessarily the wrong path (depending on what the contract looks like)...it's just a bit jarring.

I would agree - you add a guy like JT every time
The thing is, not only are MM and AM overpaid, (MM by quite a bit), the bigger issue is they get shut down too easily when the tight checking starts (ie playoffs). And these are the supposed leaders of the team - who seem to go down every year without a battle.

JT's first game against the Isles - the whole team was embarrassingly flat, and that has been the story with this team. Big moments = disappointing effort
