Before
Kirill Kaprizov returned to Russia this offseason, Bill Guerin asked his
Minnesota Wild star if he’d consider remaining in the United States or spending his offseason somewhere other than his own country.
Maybe on Fisher Island in Miami, where he stayed for a few weeks before signing his five-year, $45 million contract last fall. Maybe even in Norway with his mentor and Wild teammate,
Mats Zuccarello.
But like all NHL teams, MacLellan had no right — contractually or otherwise — to prevent his players from leaving.
And that’s exactly what Kaprizov told Guerin. He saw his parents once all season. He hadn’t gotten a chance to see his friends or brother, and he missed them.
Russia is his home.
“What am I going to do? Say no, you can’t go home?” Guerin, the Wild’s GM, said. “People want to go home. They want to see their families. They just want to be home regardless of what’s going on. I don’t blame him.”
